This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman has released a first sneak peek at the filming of the show's final season.

Shooting for the sixth and final season of the series began last Thursday (September 9), and Fogelman shared a snap of the team filming a scene with Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) as young adults holding each other in the family kitchen.

He captioned the photo: "Last first day. Feelings feelings."

Season 6 is planned to begin airing on NBC in the US in early 2022, but execs have promised that because it will premiere 'midseason', there will be fewer interruptions than in the previous series.

"We want to honour the fans by making sure they have the best viewing experience possible," NBC's Chairman of Entertainment Susan Rovner explained.

Season 5 ended back in May this year, with the finale revealing a number of surprises which will likely be explored in the upcoming season.

In a five-year flash-forward, the final episode revealed that Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) will get a divorce, and Kate will go on to marry her boss Philip (Chris Gere).

Sullivan said he and Metz found out about the split "a couple of years ago" and admitted knowing the relationship would inevitably break down was "hard to handle".

The finale also saw Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) call off their wedding and teased Randall's (Sterling K Brown) political career taking off with a 'Rising Star' profile in the New Yorker.

Fogelman previously teased what's to come in the last season. "We always knew that season six would be ambitious in terms of the way it jumps time – even more ambitious than other seasons," Fogelman told Variety.

"There will be no looming questions when we get through the end of next season," he continued. "Everything will be resolved, and you can't always claim that 100% of your audience is going to like every single decision you make for the characters, but I don't think anything will be left on the table.

"So all those locations you've been to, all those future timelines we've been to, they will all get resolutions."

This Is Us is shown on NBC in the US and on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
