Swimming & Diving's Return Complete with 2021-22 Schedule

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It hasn’t quite been like Rose DeWitt Bukater retelling the tale of the Titanic in the movie of the same name, but it might have well felt like it’s been 84 years since the Lobo swimming and diving team was able to compete in a meet.  It’s been more like 19 months.  But to someone on the team, it’s been a long 19 months, but that wait is about over, as the 2021-22 New Mexico Swimming & Diving schedule has been released, featuring the teams’ first meet on 19 months on Saturday, September 25 at home against Adams State.

Overall, the schedule features four home meets.  Along with the Sept. 25 meet against Adams State, which is a relay meet, the team will host its annual Cherry/Silver Meet Intrasquad meet on October Friday, October 1.  UNM also hosts a two-day “Halloween Howl” on October 29 and 30 and the home finale will be a double dual with Adams State and UT-Permian Basic on February 3.

The team has road dual meets scheduled for October 8 at CSU Pueblo, November 5-6 at Northern Arizona, January 6 in a double dual against Alaska-Fairbanks and San Diego State, January 8 against San Diego, January 21-22 in a double dual against Air Force and Colorado State and January 28 against New Mexico State.  The Lobos will also return after a one-year absence to the Phil Hansel Invitational in Houston November 18-20.

The Lobos, who missed the entire season last year, will make a triumphant return to the Mountain West Championships in Bryan/College Station February 16-19.

The season is a welcome site for a program that features 32 student-athletes, but only 14 who have ever competed for UNM.  The Lobos have a roster of eight freshmen, nine sophomores and one junior that haven’t yet competed for UNM.  The nine sophomores and one junior all had their 2020-21 season canceled for competition, although the squad did practice.  The team does feature seven seniors, but just one of those, diver Hannah Tiendas, being a super senior utilizing her extra year granted due to COVID.
