Vaccine Mandates — What’s Bedford Thinking?

September 13, 2021

President Biden on Thursday announced new federal vaccine requirements in an effort to increase Covid-19 vaccinations.

The new rules mandate that all employers with more than 100 workers require them to be vaccinated or test for the virus weekly, affecting about 80 million Americans. The mandate also requires the roughly 17 million workers at health facilities that receive federal Medicare or Medicaid to be fully vaccinated.

So what’s Bedford thinking: Do you agree with President Biden’s vaccine mandates?

Part of the problem is that some of these mandates are clearly illegal. I think Biden is well within his rights to require federally-funded health facilities to have their workers vaccinated or even to have them do three jumping jacks before reporting to work. But the same isn’t true for private firms, as good as the intention might be. What’s troubling is that limits on these kinds of mandates have been in place for decades and everybody, including members of the President’s team, knows this. That’s a kind of willful arrogance that’s hard to accept.
