NBA to Vote on Changing Out-of-Bounds Reviews

The importance for the coach’s challenge could increase for the NBA’s upcoming 2021-22 season. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the NBA Board of Governors will vote on changing how out-of-bounds plays are reviewed late in games.

Sources: The NBA Board of Governors will vote this month to approve the Coach’s Challenge being the lone method to review out-of-bounds calls with under two minutes left in games, meaning out-of-bounds plays will no longer be automatically triggered for officials.

If approved, limiting the number of automatically-triggered reviews should remove prolonged breaks in the action in the final moments of contests. Conversely, removing automatic review opportunities would put an even bigger emphasis on the coach’s challenge.

Along with potential rule changes, Charania also revealed that the NBA is once again discussing an in-season tournament that would dish out $1 million per player for the winning team. The NBA’s Competition Committee discussed tournament structure and payouts during a call on Monday.
