Coronation Street's Imran Habeeb and Toyah Battersby faced heartbreak in tonight's episode (September 13) as Kelly Neelan continued to struggle following Seb Franklin's murder trial.

Last week, the youngster was declared guilty, while Corey received an innocent verdict – despite the fact that hers and Nina Lucas's flashbacks confirmed that the latter was responsible for Seb's death.

Since then, she's been visibly spiralling, which led to her foster father-turned-solicitor Imran (Charlie De Melo) using the last of Gary Windass's "anonymous" donation to hire a psychologist for her.

In this evening's double-bill, however, he was shocked to learn through Toyah's stepsister Leanne (Jane Danson) that Kelly's wellbeing had taken a turn for the worse, and that she'd been rushed to hospital after trying to take her own life in prison.

"They must have known she was a major risk," he said to Toyah once he'd made it to the medical facility, having explained that he'd got drunk the night before and slept at the office.

"They knew she had been convicted of a crime which she resolutely denies and faces years for."

"Why wasn't she on suicide watch given her recent history?" Imran then barked at the authorities over the phone, as an increasingly exasperated Toyah looked on. "Do you have any idea how many people kill themselves in custody every year?!"

In a follow-up scene, Imran and Toyah perched by Kelly's (Millie Gibson) bedside, as the former blamed himself for her trauma.

"Everything just got too much," she told him, sobbing. "My life's over. I wanted to end it and I can't even do that right.

"12 years minimum. I mean, yeah, I slapped her, and I laughed and I was vile and I was horrible, but I didn't touch Seb. I didn't kick him. I tried stopping Corey. I should've done more. I should've hit him over the head or something. I just keep replaying it. I'm sad for Seb, I'm sorry for Nina, but the person I feel most sorry for is me. Who says that?!"

Later, Imran and Toyah are left devastated when they discover a voicemail from Kelly, left before she took the overdose. Realising that Toyah might have been able to talk her down, Imran berates her for not picking up the phone, before apologising.

"We both dropped the ball but Kelly's still here, and beating ourselves up about it won't help her in the slightest," Toyah said, to which Imran replied: "Agreed."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
