Volusia County school officials begin enforcing mask mandate
Monday was the first day Volusia County school officials enforced a mask mandate that was approved two weeks ago.
Students, faculty and staff had a grace period to give those who qualify time to get a medical exemption, but, otherwise, all are required to wear face coverings indoors.
School officials say they have had no significant issues on this first day, with the vast majority complying with the new requirement.
School district spokesperson Kelly Schulz said if a student won't wear a mask, they will be taken to a holding area and the parents or guardians called.
"If the parent refuses to pick up their child, then the child will sit there and work on their schoolwork until a parent comes to pick them up or they take the bus home," says Schulz.
Masks are also required on school buses though students who refuse to wear one will still be transported, Schulz said. Any disciplinary action, she added, will occur at the school.
The controversial school mask mandate is far from resolved. The Volusia County school board is holding its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday evening and amendments to the current mask policy will be considered.
