With a three-man 2022 recruiting class and just two targets left, Hubert Davis and the UNC Basketball program are starting to shift more of their focus over to the 2023 class.

Last week, Davis and his staff were on the road to visit prospects in that 2023 class hoping to continue to make a strong push for them in their recruitment. With coaches allowed to make in-home visits as well as view open practices, this is a big opportunity for UNC to make that push.

One prospect that the Tar Heels have offered in the 2023 class is five-star small forward Mackenzie Mgbako, a Gladstone, New Jersey native. Mgbako has landed 17 total offers in his recruitment and has had coaches visiting him from big programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and Michigan among others.

With his recruitment starting to pickup, Mgbako is thinking about setting up visits in the coming months and he may have his eyes on a visit to Chapel Hill. Here is what Mgbako told 247Sports reporter Dushawn London:

"“Our relationship is building day by day and I feel like they’re most definitely an option as well. With them I like Coach Davis’ character and I like speaking to him. Basketball wise, they move the ball well and get shots off quick which I enjoy. We started talking about dates where I can take a visit in the future but nothing is locked in yet.”"

But UNC may have some competition right down the road for this talented recruit.

The Duke Blue Devils are another team involved with Mgbako and just might be in the drivers seat to land him in this recruitment. Duke holds both crystal ball predictions right now in this recruitment and he just recently completed a trip to Durham. However, there is a long time to go in this recruitment and UNC has the chance to make up a lot of ground.
