The Met Gala is back, and quite possibly better than ever—at least for those of us who didn't make the guest list. After last year’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been a long and winding road to the fashion fundraiser’s official reemergence (it will take place on September 13, to cap off New York Fashion Week). While the pandemic has been the driving factor in all postponement decisions, there are also some intentional twists that will make for a thrilling return. First, there’s the theme: “American fashion,” which Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton says is “undergoing a renaissance, with young American designers at the vanguard of discussions around diversity, inclusion, sustainability and conscious creativity.”

Then, there’s the menu, which is entirely vegan. In August, the gala announced that it would be serving exclusively plant-based dishes from 10 New York-based chefs and influencers, including Junghyun Park (Atomix), Emma Bengtsson (Aquavit), Thomas Raquel (Le Bernardin), and Fabian von Hauske (Wildair).

With the Met Gala’s first-ever live stream, jaw-dropping moments like Rihanna’s 2015 Met Gala debut may now be captured in real time, for all of us following from home to see.

And finally, in a move that will give fashion followers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the normally hyper-exclusive event, the Met Gala will be live-streamed to the masses. Vogue recently announced that the 2021 event will be broadcast online starting at 5:30 p.m. ET on September 13, with actress and singer Keke Palmer and Broad City actress Ilana Glazer serving as the live stream hosts. Below, find how to watch.

Per Vogue’s announcement, viewers can tune into the live stream via Vogue.com or on Twitter at twitter.com/voguemagazine. The live stream will offer access to attendees as they make their way up the steps of Metropolitan Museum of Art and across the red carpet. The co-chairs of the gala include Gen-Z’s finest—actor Timothée Chalamet, singer Billie Eilish, tennis champion Naomi Osaka, and poet Amanda Gorman—while Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour will serve as honorary chairs.

“Each of the Met’s four co-hosts embodies the defining factor of American style: individualism,” Vogue wrote in their initial announcement. “They may approach the concept differently, but their shared passion for expressing themselves through clothing connects with the exhibition’s theme.” And now, we won't just have to take their word for it—we can watch the glamorous fête go down in real time, all from the comforts of home.
