CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Cincinnati Reds have designated for assignment a veteran reliever to make room for the return of their starting shortstop.
Brad Brach lost his bullpen job as Kyle Farmer has been reinstated from the paternity list.
The 25-year-old Brach was excellent early in the season, posting a 2.25 ERA in his first 20 innings of work. But in his last 10 innings he's allowed 16 earned runs with as many walks (9) as strikeouts.
Brach, whose ERA is 6.30, missed time this season dealing with a shoulder impingement.
Farmer, who is hitting .254 with 13 HR and 53 RBI this season, is expected to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday.
Jose Barrero was injured Saturday in a collision with center fielder Tyler Naquin chasing a shallow fly ball. Eugenio Suarez started at shortstop in Sunday's series finale in St. Louis, which the Reds lost to the Cardinals 2-0.
