An investigation continues into a crash that killed a 28-year-old Maine woman and two young girls on I-66 on Thursday.
Virginia State Police say 2012 Honda Crosstour carrying Lacquora Smith and four children was traveling east on Interstate 66 when it lost control near the 64-mile marker around 3 a.m.
The Honda struck a 2015 Toyota Rav and then continued off the right side of the interstate. The Honda hit the guardrail, re-entered the eastbound lanes, hit the Toyota a second time, continued off the left side of the interstate, and then struck that guardrail. Then it spun back into the eastbound lanes, at which point it was hit by a tractor-trailer.
Smith died at the scene, as did two passengers, a 6-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl.
The two other children in the Honda, a 7-year-old girl and a 2-year-old child, survived the crash and were transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The Toyota driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, also for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
