Cortland Captures Cialella Classic Crown with 4-1 Win vs. Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. -- Freshman Matt Shultz (Oneonta) was involved in all four Cortland scores with three goals and an assist as the Red Dragon men's soccer team defeated host Rutgers-Camden, 4-1, to claim the Cialella Soccer Classic title on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate student Blake Aronson (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) added a goal for the Red Dragons (3-1-1), while senior Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) collected two assists and sophomore Jack Coleman (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) added an assist. Junior goalie Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) made one save in 79:16 before giving way to senior Wilber Blanco (Brentwood) who stopped both shots he saw on goal.

Billy Melnick scored for Rutgers-Camden (3-1-1). Connor Smith started in goal, stopping one shot in 66:59. Sean Boen did not face a shot on goal over the final 23:01.

Shultz gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when he took a long pass from Ruggiero and finished off a shot from the left side of the box for his first collegiate goal. Shultz then set up Aronson's goal that he put inside the left post in the 57th minute for a 2-0 Cortland lead. Just over two minutes later, Shultz tallied his second goal of the game, tapping in a shot into an open goal off a feed from Coleman. Shultz completed his hat trick in the 61st minute with an open conversion in the box. Melnick spoiled the Cortland shutout bid in the 75th minute with an unassisted goal for the 4-1 final.

Shultz was named the Offensive MVP, senior Ian Blugh (Staten Island/Curtis) was named the Defensive MVP and Aronson and graduate student Scott Cebollero (Commack) joined those two on the all-tournament team.
