A California man was arrested in Washington, D.C., armed with a bayonet and a machete. The U.S. Capitol Police stopped 44-year-old Donald Craighead in his Dodge Dakota pickup truck near the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee after noticing it did not have a license plate.

Officers noted that the truck had "a swastika and other white supremacist symbols painted on it" and a picture of an American flag where the license plate was supposed to be.

"This is good police work plain and simple," Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said in a statement. "We applaud the officers' keen observation and the teamwork that resulted in this arrest."

Craighead told the officers that he was on "patrol" and began spewing "white supremacist ideology and other rhetoric."

He was taken into custody without incident and charged with Possession of Prohibited Weapons. It is illegal to have a bayonet or machete in Washington D.C.

Officials said it is unclear if he was planning an attack or intended to attend the planned "Justice for J6" rally on September 18.

"This is an excellent example of the work our officers do every day," said Operational Services Bureau Deputy Chief Jason Bell. "We are so proud of these officers for their vigilance."
