New Qualcomm chip reportedly in the works for cheaper gaming phones

Could gaming-based phones finally become more affordable?

Most smartphones marketed as gaming phones, such as the ASUS ROG Phone 5, typically have very high-end hardware inside, such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. Now a new report from WinFuture claims that Qualcomm is working on a mid-range chip that phone makers could use for a lower-cost gaming phone.

The report states the chip is called the Qualcomm SM6375, which is supposed to have four higher clock cores, and four slower cores. The story reports that there could be as many as four variants of these chips and they could have cores that could run as high as 2.5Ghz. It also claims that it is being tested on developer phones that have displays with 144Hz refresh rates, which is the same as the ASUS ROG Phone 5. It speculates that when the chip is finally announced and put into commercial phones, it could have the Snapdragon 695 branding.

The same story says that another mid-range chip, the SM6225, There’s no info on its specs yet, although the article does speculate that it could have similar features to the current “super mid-tier” Snapdragon 765 chip.

The article doesn’t state when Qualcomm will introduce these two chips, nor which upcoming phones might have them powering things inside. It does say, according to its unnamed sources, that chipmaker TSMC is making both processors. We will have to wait a little while to see if these mid-range chips will come to market.
