Filipino Food Truck Tabachoy Is Getting Its First Brick-and-Mortar

Chef Chance Anies’s chicken adobo, braised kale laing, and lumpia will debut in Passyunk Square sometime in early 2022

Chef Chance Anies, co-owner of Filipino food cart Tabachoy, announced on Sunday that the popular roving restaurant and frequent pop-up collaborator will open its first brick-and-mortar location in early 2022, likely by March. The restaurant will be located in Passyunk Square at 1300 Federal Street in South Philly.

Anies, head chef and co-owner with his wife Maria Anies, tells Eater Philly that it was “my goal from day one” to open a physical restaurant. “I knew I needed to build something prior,” he says. “I couldn’t just jump into it.” Anies began cooking pop-up dinners that honored his Filipino heritage in April of 2019, and expanded to a roving food cart in July of that year.

The Anies’s chose the spot on Federal Street after scouring the entire city for the right location. “That spot in particular is very central to the city, and it’s central to a lot of our already existing clients,” Anies says. “I knew it was a space that had a ton of potential. It needs a lot of work, but once it’s renovated, I think it’s going to be amazing.”

The space will have 25 seats and will be a BYOB, at least initially. “We’re a food truck, so our goal from the beginning was to be pretty accessible,” Anies says. As an extension of that accessibility, the brick-and-mortar will focus to start on fast casual dining with additional takeout and delivery options. Tabachoy fans can expect many of the highlights from the current Tabachoy menu — think chicken adobo and cured pork tocino — but with the addition of some beloved Filipino staples like lumpia and Anies’s take on fried chicken sandwiches.

“With a roaming food truck, we haven’t been able to host anyone in our space,” Anies says, “so we’re really excited to bring some more Filipino hospitality to the city.”
