Jacksonville, Fl — Family and friends will pay tribute to the late Tommy Hazouri this week in the Mandarin community that he called home.
Hazouri died on Saturday at the age of 76. He had been hospitalized with complications from a lung transplant and was released to hospice care in recent weeks.
Visitation will be this Wednesday, September 15 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel on San Jose.
A reception will follow at 4801 San Jose Blvd.
A funeral service will be Thursday, September 16 at 10:00 am at Mandarin Presbyterian Church on Loretto Road. Hazouri will be buried at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Former Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton paid tribute to Hazouri during a conversation with Jacksonville’s Morning News on Monday.
“He made a big difference in Jacksonville”, said Peyton, who recalled several initiatives that Hazouri led during his time in local and state politics.
Work is underway to fill the open City Council seat. The Duval County supervisor of elections office says the election has to happen within six months, according to the City Charter. Right now, the plan is to hold the election for the At-Large Group 3 seat in December with a potential runoff in February.
An exact date has not been set and it could cost tax payers between $1.2 and $1.5 million.
