The UEFA Champions League group stage gets underway this week and Borussia Dortmund make the trip to Turkey to take on Besiktas JK.

The wait is over and the UEFA Champions League is finally back. Europe’s top club competition kicks off this week and Borussia Dortmund begin their group stage campaign away to Turkish champions Besiktas JK. We could be in for a hard fought contest between two teams with immense quality in their squads.

Besiktas JK won the Turkish Süper Lig on goal difference last season, and they have started off their title defence with three wins and a draw from their opening four games. The Istanbul-based side are back in the Champions League after a three year absence. And after making several big-name signings this summer, they will be aiming to at least reach the knockout rounds of the competition. Sergen Yalcin has made quite an impact since taking over in 2020. But on Wednesday, he faces arguably his toughest assignment as Besiktas head coach.

If the last two games have taught us anything, it is that Borussia Dortmund do not like to do things the easy way. The Black and Yellows followed up their 3-2 win over Hoffenheim with a 4-3 win over Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. Defence remains a big issue for Marco Rose’s side, but the return of Mats Hummels could help bring some stability to the team.

On the other end of the pitch, Erling Haaland is scoring goals for fun at the moment. And it is no secret that he loves playing in the UEFA Champions League.
