Monday BP: Giants can clinch a playoff spot as soon as tonight

The Giants were undefeated on their last road trip, and now they have a chance to clinch a playoff spot at home tonight.

Good morning, baseball fans! The San Francisco Giants finished off their massively successful road trip yesterday by sweeping the Chicago Cubs. Which comes on the heels of sweeping the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field (though that isn’t the last we’ve seen of it this year, unfortunately).

They’ve won their last seven straight, the first time they’ve done so since May of 2016, and find themselves in a position to clinch a playoff spot tonight at home. Their goal, of course, is to win the division. But the Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be almost as allergic to losing as the Giants are, so we still have a ways to go on that front.

They’ll be hoping to do some damage to the San Diego Padres over the course of this week. And next week. And the weekend after that. Which means that the Giants are going to play a huge role in terms of whether or not the Padres hang on to their wild card spot, and vice versa with regards to the division.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, get the slightly more enviable task of playing the Diamondbacks this week after sweeping the Padres this weekend. Hopefully the Padres hang on to some of that one-hit energy for this week.
