NE Ohio breweries win 8 awards at U.S. Open Beer Championships

Six Northeast Ohio breweries won eight awards in the recently held U.S. Open Beer Championships.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Six breweries from Northeast Ohio won eight awards in the U.S. Open Beer Championships held this month in Oxford.

Blue Heron Brewery and Event Center in Medina and Missing Falls Brewery in Akron led the way with two awards each.

The competition drew 8,000 beers in more than 130 style categories.

Here are the Northeast Ohio winners by category:

Strong/Imperial Brown Ale: Rebound Brown Ale, silver, Blue Heron Brewery and Event Center, Medina.

Foreign Stout: Beastie, bronze, Market Garden Brewery, Cleveland.

Barley Wine Specialty: 50 By 50 Silver, Blue Heron Brewery and Event Center, Medina.

Strong Scottish Ale: Scot Rail Ale, silver, Missing Falls Brewery, Akron.

Irish Red Ale: Langered, bronze, Missing Falls Brewery, Akron.

French / Belgian Saison: A Beer of One’s Own, bronze, Codex Brewing Co., North Canton.

Bock: King Gambrinus, silver, Canton Brewing Co., Canton.

Honey Beer: Rock Bass Honey Nut Brown, silver, Muskellunge Brewing Co., Canton.

Toppling Goliath Brewing of Decorah, Iowa, earned the Grand National Champion title.

Many breweries from outside of Northeast Ohio fared well; here’s the winners list.

It’s been a big month for Ohio breweries winning awards. The state - and Northeast Ohio in particular - fared very well at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival competition.
