HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With three goals in the contest, the Marshall University women's soccer team (3-4-1) closed out non-conference play with a 3-0 shutout over the VMI Keydets (2-5-0) on Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.

Freshman forward Meg Jarvis scored two goals, senior forward Kat Gonzalez added another and freshman Mira Pastoft was credited with the clean sheet.

"We grinded it out," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the win. "We had a busy weekend. We had a good team function yesterday, but it took it out of us. We had a tough game against Radford on Thursday night. You couple that with a little bit of heat today and it can be tough. The concentration level at times was outstanding. In a game like that when your back four didn't touch the ball a whole lot or was under a lot of pressure, we tried to get them to start the attack and they did that today. Hat's off to the back four and Mira."

Junior forward Morgan White wasted little time firing the first shot on goal a mere 23 seconds as it was saved by VMI goalkeeper Jillian Hall.

There was a lull in the action before Pastoft made her first save of the match in the 18th minute to keep the contest scoreless.

After seeing a shot saved in the 26th minute, Jarvis took a pass from Gonzalez and chipped the ball over top of the keeper three minutes later to make it 1-0 Herd on her second goal of the season.

"It felt good, especially doing it at home with the fans around you because it was a confidence booster," Jarvis said seeing a couple of shots find the back of the net. "In the past couple of games, I over thought it a bit, but today I knew it had to be done to give us confidence going into the next game."

MU kept up the pressure as Gonzalez saw one of her three shots on goal saved at 31:04 mark and sophomore midfielder Abi Hugh hit the woodwork in the 41st minute.

Just under two minutes later, Jarvis took the ball, fired it from a few yards outside the 18-yard box, hit it off the crossbar and into the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, her then-team leading third goal of the season.

"It was two really good finishes from Meg," Swan commented. "When we brought her here, that was one of the big things that stood out for us seeing her play. She can finish. She said it herself, she didn't overthink it and instinctively did what she did with two quality goals."

Coming out of halftime, neither team had a shot in the first few minutes of the second stanza. However, at the 52:32 mark, freshman midfielder Cassidy Bell dished a give-and-go to Gonzalez as the senior fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and found the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 3-0 Marshall. It was her third goal of season, tying Jarvis for the team lead.

"Kat got us started in the second half. She's got that in her locker with her great vision. She's got a great right foot and she produced a good one," Swan added about Gonzalez's goal.

The offensive barrage continued as Hugh and Jarvis each saw shots saved in the 55th minute, Gonzalez had an attempt saved in the 61st and freshman forward Cami Wolf saw her attempt saved in the 74th.

Pastoft made a save on VMI's second shot of the contest at the 81:57 mark to preserve the 3-0 shutout and clean sheet.

The Herd outshot the Keydets 20-3, including 8-2 in shots on goal, and had eight corners to none for VMI.
