Sam Kerr bags Chelsea brace with return to Australia on her mind after two-year wait

Sam Kerr Chelsea 2021-22

Matildas star Sam Kerr scored twice for Chelsea on Sunday night as they beat Everton 4-0 in the Women's Super League.

After a surprise loss to Arsenal in their season opener last weekend, the Blues were able to bounce back with their Aussie star leading the way.

Kerr scored Chelsea's second just after half-time following a poor defensive mistake from the Toffees, before heading home her second in the 74th minute.

The Blues are looking to defend their league title this season with Kerr also out to claim consecutive golden boots after scoring 21 times in her last WSL campaign.

The Matildas star's fine form at club level is all the more impressive considering she's been unable to return home for nearly two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Travel to Australia has been too difficult to arrange due to closed borders and hotel quarantine requirements with Kerr recently admitting she's ready to put her club season on hold once she's able to go home freely.

"Being away from home is the biggest struggle I am having at the moment," Kerr told News Corp

"My coach Emma (Hayes) knows that...the problem for me and a lot of the Aussie girls is we just don’t know the next time we will see our families. We don’t know when we’ll get home and that’s really tough.

"I’ve said to Emma that when the border opens, I am on the first flight home.

"It’s hard when in the UK it is such an open life...they have learned to live with COVID but in Australia...it seems a slower process to get to this point.

"I’ve been here for two years now and no one has come and seen a game, not one of my family members...and I haven’t been home to see my Nan, who is in her 80s."

Kerr could return to Australia as soon as November on international duty with The Sydney Morning Herald reporting earlier this month that the Matildas are hopeful of hosting two matches against the United States in Sydney.

Before that, however, Tony Gustavsson's side have already locked in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland to be played in Dublin on September 22.
