ASU Soccer: Sun Devils hold off No. 21 Texas Tech comeback to improve to 7-1

Upset in Tucson

Zac BonDurant

Previously undefeated No. 21 Texas Tech (6-1-1) tried its hardest to make a comeback in the end, but Arizona State (7-1-0) quick start was too much. The Sun Devils handed the Red Raiders their first loss of the season after winning 3-2 in Tucson on Sunday.

The teams were scoreless for much of the first half until Dai Williams and Olive Kearse-Thomas connected in the 45th minute. Williams did an incredible job against two defenders to create space before firing the ball in front of the net for Kearse-Thomas, who put it in.

Nicole Douglas put in a penalty kick that the Sun Devils earned in the 52nd minute. The English striker now has eight goals this season. Jazmine Wilkinson extended the lead to three in 60th minute off a corner kick from Kiki Stewart.

Kirsten Davis finally put Texas Tech on the board in the 64th minute. The Sun Devil backline blocked multiple shots after the Red Raider corner, but failed to clear it leading to the goal. Charlotte Teeter made things interesting on a beautiful set piece off a free kick, sending in a ball over Brita Gudlaugs in the 71st minute. The freshman keeper stood tall the rest of the way, ending her day with seven saves and an upset victory of Texas Tech.

The Sun Devils close out their non-conference schedule on September 17 when they travel to Colorado College.
