CHICAGO -- The number of Red Sox players who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 17 days has reached a dozen.
Reliever Phillips Valdez tested positive for the virus Sunday and was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, the team announced. Right-hander Brad Peacock took his place on the active roster.
Valdez is the third Red Sox player to test positive since Friday, joining Chris Sale and Danny Santana. Since Aug. 27, when Kiké Hernández registered the first positive test by a Sox player, 12 total players have tested positive. Currently, the Red Sox have 10 players on the COVID-19 list, including nine who tested positive.
Valdez, 29, owns a 5.85 ERA in 28 appearances for the Red Sox this season. Peacock, who was acquired from Cleveland on Aug. 31, has a 15.19 ERA in two appearances (5⅓ innings). He was sent down to the WooSox on Saturday but remained with the big-league club in Chicago as part of the taxi squad.
