Zion Williamson takes in USC game -- he picked the wrong one to attend

The city of Los Angeles is full of stars, as shown by celebrity sightings at USC games in the Coliseum over the years. On Saturday night for a primetime showdown against Stanford, USC played host to at least one star in attendance.

NBA star Zion Williamson was on the sidelines for the Trojans’ game against the Cardinal, taking in the atmosphere for the first time in his life.

Cue the jokes about Zion not being able to field a winning team, given his struggles with the New Orleans Pelicans and the problems general manager David Griffin has had in surrounding him with the right roster and coaching staff to fully unlock his talents and give the Pelicans a chance to maximize their potential.

Notably, the Pelicans have a soft spot in the hearts of Angelenos. Griffin — in a deal some NBA fans felt was good for New Orleans at the time it was made — shipped Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers in return for a large number of assets.

The Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship, their first in 10 years. The Pelicans never really grew into the team some analysts thought they would become. Zion’s career, while hardly a bust, hasn’t gone the way he had hoped.

USC football has been a bust, and Saturday night, Stanford busted through the Trojans’ weak defense.

While USC couldn’t perform well on the field, a gracious and generous Zion Williamson still seemed to enjoy himself and the environment for the game:

Williamson attended Duke for one year before being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NBA draft by the Pelicans. He has quickly risen to star status and is one of the prominent new faces of the NBA, even though the Pelicans and Griffin have struggled to give him an ideal situation.

At least someone seemed to enjoy themselves in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night — someone other than Stanford, that is.
