LIVE Transfer Talk: Real Madrid rival Chelsea for Juventus' De Ligt

The summer transfer window is closed for the top leagues in Europe! After a summer full of international football, countless clubs waited until the last minute to pull off their transfers. See all the major deals here and check out how we graded the biggest signings. But just because the window is shut until January, that doesn't mean the rumours won't keep coming.

TOP STORY: Madrid, Chelsea eye Juve's De Ligt

Real Madrid will join the race to sign Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt -- a race that has also included Chelsea.

According to Calciomercato, the Spanish giants are keen on the Netherlands centre-back after seeing Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos move away from the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Los Blancos are therefore prioritising a move for a top-level centre-back at the next possible opportunity, but any deal is unlikely to be cheap with the Serie A star signing for Juventus from Ajax back in 2019 for a €75 million fee.

Chelsea were rumoured to be in the hunt  for the signature of the 22-year-old, although they also remain closely linked with Sevilla FC star Jules Kounde.

21.35 BST: That'll do it for another day of our live Transfer Talk blog, but we'll be back very shortly with tomorrow's paper round. Thanks as always for checking in!

20.48 BST: Corinthians have agreed not to give a debut on Sunday to former Arsenal and Chelsea winger Willian after Brazil's health regulator threatened the club and player with action if he did not complete a 14-day quarantine after arriving from England.

Willian arrived in Brazil on Sept. 1 and trained with the squad ahead of what was going to be his debut against Atletico Goianiense.

However, Brazil's health regulator Anvisa said the player agreed on entering Brazil to quarantine for 14 days because he had come from England.

"Ever since the start of the pandemic the club has always complied with the sanitary rules imposed by different health bodies, even when some of them were confusing," Corinthians said in a statement hours before Sunday's match. "Therefore we will comply without question."

19.59 BST: Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland is a man in demand, but 90min.com says the Norwegian won't rush his decision about the next club he could play for. Haaland has a release clause of £70m that kicks in next summer, which will surely have Europe's top clubs salivating at having the chance to sign the sensational striker at a cut rate. The outlet adds that, despite rumours to the contrary, Dortmund have made no verbal agreements with potential suitors like Chelsea and Real Madrid as to where Haaland will end up if and when he leaves the Bundesliga side.

19.07 BST: One from the Scottish Sun here, which reports that Everton have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Rangers Nathan Patterson after Merseyside rivals Liverpool decided to withdraw their interest in the 19-year-old. Rangers rejected a bid from Liverpool this summer, which puts Everton in pole position to make their move with the report saying the Toffees are willing to pay the £10m the Scottish club are seeking for the starlet.

18.18 BST: Dani Olmo is a wanted player at some of Europe's top clubs, with Manchester United the latest to show interest in the Spain international and RB Leipzig star, says the Mirror. Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus have also shown interest in the 23-year-old Olmo, who the report states could fetch a transfer fee of up to £60m.

17.28 BST: According to the Mirror, Jesse Lingard could soon be leaving Manchester United on a free transfer. The midfielder, who had a solid season on loan at West Ham last season, is still locked in a contract standoff with the Old Trafford club that will see him eventually end his tenure for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. The report adds that Lingard had hoped to make more appearances for Man United after returning from West Ham, but has only played four minutes this term and can expect time on the pitch to be more hard to come by with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

16.36 BST: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will remain in the Gunner's starting lineup, raising further doubts over the future of Bernd Leno at the club.

Ramsdale, Arsenal's £30m summer signing, kept the club's first Premier League clean sheet of the season in Saturday's 1-0 win over Norwich City.

Leno, who has a contract with Arsenal that runs until 2023, admitted in the summer that he was "open to everything" regarding his future at the Emirates, and that may be exacerbated now that his position as the club's No. 1 is under threat.

"[Ramsdale] was terrific, not only what he did on the technical side but what he transmits, his chemistry with the back line, his body language," Arteta said after the match. "It was top.

"We have two fantastic keepers, I had to make a decision today and it was the right one. I want to see how they perform, we need performances. Whoever is more reliable is going to play."

Ramsdale told Sky postmatch: "I signed to come into the team whenever that might have been. I've got to carry on working on the training pitch and keep the competition with Bernd [Leno] and hopefully I can stay in the team and keep helping out."

15.19 BST: LaLiga president Javier Tebas has claimed that Barcelona could have avoided losing Lionel Messi this summer if they had allowed a major investment deal for the league to happen.

Tebas has been highly critical of Real Madrid and Barcelona's support for a proposed European Super League, calling it "a joke" and describing the two clubs and Juventus as "shipwrecked" after the nine other founding members apologised and disowned the project.

He blamed Madrid and Barca's rejection of the €2.7 billion investment deal with CVC Capital Partners -- which was approved by 38 clubs from LaLiga's First and Second Divisions -- on the Super League row. The CVC investment -- which sees the fund take a 10% stake in LaLiga's future earnings from the sale of audiovisual rights for a period of up to 50 years -- was intended, in part, to provide Barcelona with the cash injection needed to keep Messi.

The club were unable to register a new contract for the Argentina forward when his previous deal expired under LaLiga's strict financial salary limits, leading to him joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

"Yes [Messi's departure could have been avoided]," Tebas said. "I spoke about it with Laporta personally... I think next season with the figures Barca put out, we'll see if Messi could really have stayed or not.

"It wasn't a financial decision. I know that for sure," he said. "If Laporta shook hands with Messi, it was because for a month he had accepted the CVC offer. He was in favour for a month. That's why he said things were going well. He even called me twice to speed up the CVC operation, because Messi was getting nervous."

14.24 BST: Manchester United could face competition to sign West Ham's Declan Rice from local rivals Manchester City, The Sun on Sunday reports.

Sources told ESPN's Mark Ogden last week that United remain keen on Rice despite deciding against investing in a midfielder this summer, as a winger and centre-back were identified as the club's primary targets. The summer budget was spent on winger Jadon Sancho and defender Raphael Varane, while a deal for forward Cristiano Ronaldo was financed with funds from outside the transfer pot.

Sources have told ESPN that a striker and a midfielder are on the list ahead of next summer with England international Rice among a number of options that will be narrowed down over the course of the next 12 months.

Now The Sun on Sunday reports that Premier League champions City have monitoring Rice's progress ever since he broke into the West Ham first team and see the 22-year-old as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, who turns 37 this season.

13.27 BST: Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says it was an easy decision to keep Callum Hudson-Odoi at the club on transfer deadline day.

Leicester City and Borussia Dortmund were reportedly both interested in taking the England international on loan but Tuchel did not want to lose the versatile 20-year-old -- who made his 100th appearance for Chelsea in Saturday's 3-0 win over Aston Villa -- for the season.

"We have spoken. It was a very easy decision for me to make on the last day of the transfer period," Tuchel said. "We cannot let a player who is in the 18/19 man squad leave. He is able to play as a right wing-back, a left wing-back, in the two ten positions. He knows the group, we know him very well. There was no chance to say yes on the last day.

"For him personally, it may have been a good opportunity but for us and our targets that we want to achieve, it was simply impossible. It was an easy one for me actually."

12.34 BST: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists he is happy with the clubs limited summer business as he does not want to involved in the "circus" of the transfer window.

The €41.5m signing of central defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig was the only addition to Klopp's first-team squad ahead of the 2021-22 season, as the club focused instead on handing several key players new contracts.

"We thought it made sense that we sign up our squad that we have," Klopp said. "That is not as spectacular as all the rest around. I cannot change that because you cannot do transfer business just to be in a circus."

Liverpool's attacking options are set to be significantly depleted in January when forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will represent Egypt and Senegal respectively at the African Cup of Nations, but Klopp said he will not seek to sign any replacements in the winter transfer window.

"That's completely fine, we knew it and we will deal with it," he said. "People are now saying: 'You have to sign two strikers of the same quality of Sadio and Mo.' That cannot be the solution because we cannot do that."

11.42 BST: England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has put contract talks with West Bromwich Albion on hold to focus on helping the club win immediate promotion back to the Premier League, according to The Sun on Sunday.

Sources told ESPN in May that Johnstone's former club Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were all monitoring the 28-year-old.

Johnstone, who was part of the England squad at the European Championship in the summer, has a contract at The Hawthorns which is due to expire at the end of the season.

10.49 BST: Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars says he would prefer to take up a similar role at Barcelona than Arsenal if the opportunity arose at either of his former clubs.

Overmars won the 1997-98 Premier League and FA Cup double in his first season as an Arsenal player, before moving to Barca in 2000 where he stayed for four years.

The former Netherlands international, 48, has been linked with a return to Arsenal as a replacement for Gunners' technical director Edu. However, Overmars says he would rather move back to Catalonia if the time was right.

"At a certain point the thing is simple: either I continue and stay here at Ajax or we go abroad again as a family," Overmars told Ajax Life. "I have let that train pass six times.

"Both [Arsenal and Barcelona] are interesting [options], but I think my family would choose Spain. We were very comfortable there and I think that I would choose Barcelona."

09.55 BST: Former Chelsea captain John Terry would be interested in taking his first managerial role at Nottingham Forest if Chris Hughton leaves the Championship club, The Sun on Sunday reports.

Terry recently left Aston Villa after nearly three years on manager Dean Smith's coaching staff, as he looks to embark on his own career as a manager.

The 40-year-old made six appearances for Forest during a brief loan spell early in his playing career in 2000, and could return to the City Ground if the club's results do not improve.

Forest are bottom of the Championship without a win after five games, and they host Cardiff City later on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. BST (stream LIVE on ESPN+ in the U.S.).

09.00 BST: Former Brazil centre-back David Luiz has joined Rio de Janeiro side Flamengo, the club announced on Saturday.

Luiz, who was capped 57 times by Brazil, was without a club after leaving Arsenal in July. The 34-year-old has signed a deal until December 2022.

"The people demanded it, the heart shook and now he will be wearing the red and black," Flamengo wrote in a tweet.

PAPER GOSSIP (by Adam Brown)

- The Daily Star reports that Manchester City will challenge Liverpool for Jude Bellingham. Pep Guardiola's side see the Borussia Dortmund star as a long term replacement for Fernandinho, with the 36-year-old's contract set to expire at the end of the season. The Premier League champions are the latest club to join the race for Bellingham, with Liverpool reportedly making the 18-year-old a priority signing.

- Atletico Madrid are targeting moves for Franck Kessie and Robin Gosens, reports Calciomercato. The Spanish club have reportedly identified the two players as potential upgrades in January. Contract talks reportedly stalling over a new deal between Ivory Coast international Kessie and AC Milan, while Atalanta man Gosens raised his profile with a stellar Euro 2020 campaign with Germany.

- Paulo Dybala talks will commence over the next weeks as Juventus look to tie down one of their key stars to new terms. Fabrizio Romano says that the club are looking to fix the situation as soon as possible and will meet the player's representatives to look to find a conclusion to the contract talks that have gone on throughout the summer. The 27-year-old has contributed to two goals in two games so far this season.

- Dusan Vlahovic contract talks are underway with Fiorentina looking to fend off interest in their star frontman, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Serbia international's impressive goal return in Serie A has seen top European clubs circling for the signature of the striker, with the Viola reported to have rejected a €60m bid from Atletico Madrid in the summer.
