NASCAR results from Richmond Raceway; Playoffs continue

Tonight, the NASCAR Cup Series unloads in Richmond, Virginia. The 0.75-mile short track of Richmond Raceway is set to host race two in round one of the NASCAR Playoffs.

Kyle Larson was scheduled to start from the pole position. Following an inspection issue, that won’t be the case.

Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 80 (1-80 / 400)

Green flag, Martin Truex Jr gets the jump on the inside into turn one. Denny Hamlin holds 2nd off turn two.

Penalty: Martin Truex Jr has been penalized for jumping the start. He’ll serve a pass through.

Lap 31, the competition caution is out. Hamlin leads the leaders onto the pit line, Kurt Busch wins the race to the pit exit.

Pit Penalty: Kyle Busch will head to the rear for equipment interference.

Green, Busch and Hamlin run side by side into turn one. Hamlin drives it deep on the outside in turn three, Hamlin holds the lead.

Lap 41, flat left rear on Kurt Busch! He loops it in turn one and slams the outside wall, driver’s side impact. The caution is out.

Green, Hamlin gets the jump on the inside. Ryan Blaney follows him through on the bottom to take 2nd away.

4 to go in stage one, Hamlin leads. Chase Elliott tags the rear bumper of Joey Logano as they battle for 2nd. Elliott clears him on the inside.

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 155 (81-235 / 400)

Pit Penalty: Playoff driver Michael McDowell has been caught speeding and will be sent to the rear.

Green flag on stage two, Hamlin noses ahead on the inside of turn one. Elliott drives it deep on the outside but can’t hold it on his right rear, Hamlin leads.

Lap 90, Hamlin gets loose off turn two, Elliott looks to the inside. Hamlin lifts and hands the lead to Elliott off turn two.

Lap 132, green flag pit stops are underway as Hamlin pits from the race lead.

Lap 138, Hamlin drives by Chase Elliott on the outside. Hamlin cycles back to the lead.

Lap 161, Hamlin works heavy lap traffic. Elliott closes to his bumper. Elliott moves up a land and crosses under Hamlin off turn two. They run three wide with lap cars, Elliott to the lead in turn three.

Lap 178, Elliott struggles with lap traffic and Hamlin closes to his bumper. Hamlin looks to the outside, Elliott clips the apron and gets loose. Hamlin clears him to retake the lead.

Lap 181

Lap 181, Hamlin and Elliott hit the pit lane. The No. 9 car falls off the jack as Elliott backs up! Light left side damage and a slow stop for Elliott. Elliott is now on the tail of the lead lap.

Lap 200, Hamlin leads Kyle Busch by 2.5 seconds.

Lap 218, Elliott struggles in dirty air. Hamlin runs him down and drives by to put Elliott a lap down.

3 to go in stage one, Hamlin puts William Byron a lap down. Only the first car down gets their lap back. Elliott drives it deep to the bottom, doors teammate William Byron and places himself the first car a lap down.

Denny Hamlin cruises to the win in stage two at Richmond Raceway! Chase Elliott is the first car a lap down and will get his lap back.

Pit Penalty: Ross Chastain has been caught speeding and will go to the tail.

Green flag on stage three, Hamlin leads on the inside as Martin Truex Jr and Kyle Busch run side by side for 2nd behind him. Truex Jr takes over 2nd.

Lap 151, Bubba Wallace slams the wall in turn one, caution.

Green, Hamlin leads Truex Jr into turn one. Christopher Bell works to the outside of Truex Jr but he can’t complete the pass.

Lap 268, Martin Truex Jr is all over the bumper of Hamlin. He has a run off turn four and drives deep into turn one. Hamlin checks up and hands the lead to Truex Jr.

Lap 293

Lap 293, green flag pit stops are underway. Five laps later, Truex Jr and Hamlin pit together.

Pit Penalty: Michael McDowell has been caught speeding again. As he serves the penalty, he’s speeding yet again.

Lap 301, Ross Chastain cycles to the race lead with Kyle Busch running him down. Truex Jr runs 3rd.

95 to go, Kyle Busch has a run on Chastain into turn one. He dives to the inside and clears him with ease, Busch leads.

82 to go, Kyle Busch leads Treux Jr by 2.3 seconds. Busch works heavy lap traffic.

57 to go

57 to go, green flag pit stops are under. Truex Jr pits first.

Pit Penalty: Kyle Busch has been caught speeding and will serve a pass through.

52 to go, Truex Jr cycles to the race lead, Hamlin trails by 8 seconds.

35 to go, Truex Jr leads Hamlin by 5.6 seconds.

20 to go, Truex Jr leads Hamlin by 5.1 seconds.

10 to go, Truex Jr leads Hamlin by 3.4 seconds.

5 to go, Truex Jr leads Hamlin by 2.6 seconds.
