Eduardo Escobar had homered only twice in 112 plate appearances since being traded to the Brewers.

CLEVELAND- When infielder Eduardo Escobar hit home runs from both sides of the plate Friday night, it was not the first time he accomplished that feat in the big leagues.

He did it three times while playing for Arizona, all in the same season in 2019, no less.

That year, Escobar went deep both righty and lefty on June 10 in a 13-8 victory in Philadelphia, on July 17 in a 19-4 romp at Texas and on Aug. 3 in an 18-7 rout of Washington. So, when he does it, his team wins big.

Escobar, 32, spent 10 days on the injured list with a hamstring strain in late August/early September and had homered only twice in 112 plate appearances since being traded to the Brewers by the Diamondbacks on July 28 before hitting a decisive blast in the sixth inning Wednesday night in a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia.

Then came the two home runs Friday night, in consecutive at-bats, leading off the fifth and sixth innings.

“He had two home runs going into Wednesday night’s game,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “He took some good swings that night before the home run.

“(Friday night), he just missed one early in the game (fly ball to deep right in the first inning). And, frankly, he just missed one in his last at-bat as well (a swing that resulted in a towering infield popup)."
