CHICAGO -- Another day, yet another positive COVID-19 test for a Red Sox player.
Infielder/outfielder Danny Santana tested positive for the virus Saturday and was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, the team announced. Infielder Jack López, who was in Chicago as part of the team’s taxi squad, was added to the active roster to replace Santana.
Santana is the 11th Red Sox player to test positive for COVID-19 since Aug. 27 and becomes the 10th player currently on the COVID-19 IL. He joins infielders Christian Arroyo, Yairo Muñoz and Jonathan Araúz, outfielder Jarren Duran and pitchers Martín Pérez, Matt Barnes, Hirokazu Sawamura, Nick Pivetta and Chris Sale on the COVID-19 IL.
Santana himself was on the COVID-19 list from Sunday to Tuesday after experiencing symptoms, but he tested negative repeatedly and consistently tested negative. He played Friday night against the White Sox before being ruled inactive Saturday.
López, a 28-year-old minor-league journeyman, made his big-league debut Sept. 1 after being called up once the first wave of COVID-19 cases started surfacing. He made five starts at second base before being sent back to the WooSox on Monday, going 2-for-12 (.167) with two doubles and one walk.
