With apologies, I have missed most of today’s game owing to family obligations. But I checked back in to see both that the Cubs are getting walloped, and also Jason Heyward left the game early after a collision at third base.
Here’s the play that knocked Heyward out of the game, and it’s an inadvertent but ugly blow to the head:
That obviously did not look good, and it took Heyward a while to get to his feet to depart the game. You could see that Brandon Crawford’s knee hit Heyward in the head as he was sliding – just one of those fluke plays that is hard to avoid, because both guys are hustling to the same spot.
You just hope it isn’t a concussion, or something with any other kind of damage to the face or jaw. Alfonso Rivas came into the game to play left field, with Ian Happ shifting over to right. We’ll update when there’s more info.
UPDATE: There’s no official word yet, but here’s what interim manager Andy Green told NBCSC after the game: “He’s definitely going to be watched closely over the next 24 hours and find out where he’s at. I don’t think there’s a formal diagnosis at this point in time, but somebody we’re going to monitor very close and make sure J is doing OK.”
