Rio Ferdinand claims 'inexperienced' Japhet Tanganga 'cost' Spurs after being sent off in their capitulation at Crystal Palace... as Peter Crouch insists youngster needed to be calmed down after Wilfried Zaha clash

• Peter Crouch agreed and said he 'didn't need to get involved' with challenge 

Rio Ferdinand delivered a scathing verdict of Japhet Tanganga's conduct in Tottenham's 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday, saying he showed 'a lack of experience' after being sent off.

The Spurs defender was shown a second yellow in the second half at Selhurst Park, with the scores level at the time, having made a shoulder barge on Wilfried Zaha before a rash tackle on Jordan Ayew. 

Ferdinand, watching the game as a BT Sport pundit, felt the sending off cost Spurs and said he was punished for a 'rush of blood', insisting he needed his team-mates around him to 'calm him down'.  

'I was looking after the melee to see if someone got hold of Tanganga. When game starts again you need someone to calm him down.

'It's a lack of experience and rush of blood. He'll get over it but it cost them today.'

Tanganga has started all four of Tottenham's opening games of the season - impressing in the first three to help the team keep three clean sheets and rise to the top of the Premier League table.

But he was given a rough time down the right flank up against the menacing Wilfried Zaha, and Ferdinand's fellow pundit and former Spurs striker Peter Crouch agreed with him, calling the decisive challenge that earned his red card 'needless'. 

So many times you see it you dive in and make that rash challenge.

'It was something he didn't need to get involved with. The first yellow card - it was obvious he was miles away from Zaha, who skips past him and it was all needless.' 

Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo admitted his side were up against a tough task with 'a lot of obstacles' after their red card

We just look at the game. We had a lot of obstacles to overcame. I think we were in control of the game in the first half. 

'We didn't create much, but we didn't allow too much. We spoke at half-time and the perspective was to improve, but it didn't happen.'
