The sound of a train often ignites excitement in children and adults alike.
What you might be most familiar with at the Oklahoma Railway Museum is its holiday extravaganza in the form of a local Polar Express ride. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, put that Christmas tradition on pause.
"Really looking forward to that. We missed that last year. Really exciting event. Very festive," Oklahoma Railway Museum board president Eric Dilbeck said.
But there is some good news now. Not only is the Polar Express ride back, but an expansion is in the works.
"We've doubled the size of our acreage from what we have now," Dilbeck said. "A total of about 7 1/2 acres. The second half was purchased about 20 years ago."
The cost will run about $1.5 million to $2 million.
"Major plans for that property will be putting in a 100-foot turntable," Dilbeck said. "A nine to 10-day roundhouse that will go in front of the turntable."
The expansion will give the museum a very specific look.
"Basically going to be creating a prototypical railway site," Dilbeck said. "And then, also, we'll have an event center for the museum."
Fundraising is part of the process.
"Next year, (we) hope to start a major capital campaign for what we are calling phase one," Dilbeck said.
Work behind the scenes is happening as well.
"We are doing a lot of work in the background with architects," Dilbeck said. "One of the major things that we're doing this year is working on a new position for the museum to be a fundraising person."
The expansion is on track to be an incredible upgrade.
