Bruno Fernandes hits back at concerns over Cristiano Ronaldo compatibility at Man Utd
Bruno Fernandes has hit back at concerns that Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United will disrupt the side’s attacking system.
Ronaldo netted twice on his return to the club as he propelled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to a comprehensive 4-1 victory at home to Newcastle on Saturday.
It was a celebratory day at Old Trafford with Fernandes blasting home United’s third with a superb long-range strike before substitute Jesse Lingard added a fourth goal late on.
Despite United enduring a stop-start first half performance, they clicked into gear when Ronaldo restored their lead in the second half and punished the visitors.
Fernandes used his post-match interview to dismiss suggestions that his role at United would not be compatible with the return of Ronaldo, whom he plays alongside with Portugal.
The playmaker has not enjoyed the same level of success at international level as he has at United amid speculation that it may be because of Ronaldo’s presence in the side.
Both Portuguese stars are set-piece experts and each are keen to take penalties for their side, while they are often occupying similar areas of the pitch.
Fernandes - who played a role in helping Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford - rejected such speculation as he claimed that “good players can always play well together” and they were excited to play alongside each other.
Fernandes explained on Sky Sports after the game: "It was almost perfect if we did not concede. We are really happy and the performance in general was really good.
"Newcastle are really organised, defend well but we moved the ball quick and waited for the right moment to hit them.
"It is something I am working on and today I got the chance and scored.
"Everyone knows what Cristiano Ronaldo brought for the club and we are really happy to have him. The most important, as he will say, is the result for the team. Good players can always play well together.
"We arrived at the end (of last season) with some mistakes but did really well. There has been an improvement in the club and now it is time to take the next step."

Ronaldo took to Instagram after the match to post: "My return to Old Trafford was just a brief reminder of why this stadium is known as the Theatre of Dreams.
"For me, it has always been a magical place where you can achieve everything you set your mind into.
"Along with all my teammates and with the amazing support that we always get from the stands, we face the road ahead with confidence and optimism that we’ll all be celebrating together in the end.
"Proud to be back at Man. United and playing in the Premier League once again, but above all, happy to help the team!
"Let’s go, Devils!"
Post-match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told BBC Sport: "Ronaldo senses the big moments and is ruthless. He is clinical, has lifted the team and everyone around us.
"The fans can dream, we will keep our feet on the ground."
