Justin Herbert could do no wrong for the Los Angeles Chargers last season. The third quarterback taken off the board during the 2020 NFL Draft outshined his more highly touted peers in Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa to become the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
But apparently, his talents extend off the field as well. According to his Chargers roommates and draft classmates Nate Gilliam and Gabe Nabers, Justin Herbert also cooks a mean brisket.

“He won’t take credit for it, but he’s like the head of the operation when it comes to cooking the meat,” Nabers, a fullback, said of Herbert. “I’m like the sous chef and sides guy. I’m the ultimate sides guy.”
The rookie trio started making it a tradition to host a feast in their abode whenever the Chargers won a game. The headliner of said feast? Herbert's own “victory brisket”.
Chargers fans can only hope there are much more than seven victory briskets to go around next season, as Herbert enters with even greater expectations following a standout rookie campaign. When he's not showing off his culinary skills, Justin Herbert is said to be burying himself with film study.
“We’d get home and he’d be in his own zone,” Nabers said of the Chargers QB. “Me and Nate would have our own things that we do and I’d be in my room watching film. … But Justin would always be downstairs in his office watching film.”
“For him, he sees the coverages. He sees certain things a different way. … He just picked it up a little bit quicker than the normal person.”
Feasting and film sessions sound like a winning combination of off-field activities for Justin Herbert. We'll have to wait and see if they help him bring more winning on the field for the Chargers.
