Each month we will be shining a light on different dog breeds in our series, Dog Breed of the Month. This month, we take a deep dive into the world of Poodles. Want to adopt one of your own? Keep reading to find out all you need to know, including size, temperament and character.
"Poodles are intelligent and versatile dogs that make a great family pet and companion," Bill Lambert, spokesperson for The Kennel Club, tells Country Living. "Their three varieties – Toy, Miniature and Standard – tend to be energetic and loyal. Poodles are active, happy dogs that need enough physical and mental stimulation. Their minimally-shedding coat makes them a suitable choice for those with allergies."
Are poodles good pets?
Yes, Poodles make excellent pets. They might have a glamorous appearance, but all varieties of Poodle share similar personality traits including intelligence, a balanced character, happy spirit, and a good temper.
Fun, energetic and easy to train, they prefer to be with people most of the time. Before adopting one of your own, it's worth knowing that they need plenty of exercise (both for the mind and body), and are not good kennel dogs.
Are poodles good for first time owners?
"Poodles are suitable for various owners due to their lovable nature and intelligence," Bill tells us. "They can be a good choice for first-time owners, as long as they are ready to dedicate time to their exercise. Poodles will be happy in the countryside or a town, but while Toy Poodles can happily live in a small apartment, Miniature and Standard Poodles will be happier in a bigger space."
How often should a poodle be groomed?
If a poodle isn't groomed often, their hair will continue to grow and become more matted over time.
Bill adds: "Poodles are well-known for their elegant coat which needs regular maintenance and daily grooming. The coat does not shed, so will need to be trimmed with scissors and/or clippers on a fairly regular basis."
What colours do Poodles come in?
According to the Kennel Club, Poodles come in the following colours:
- Apricot
- Black
- Blue
- Brown
- Cream
- Red
- Silver
- White
How much exercise does a poodle need?
"Despite their glamorous appearance, they are active dogs that like their exercise and need up to an hour every day," Bill tells us. If you don't have a large garden, ensure your poodle is regularly stretching its legs by walking around a park or public walking route.
