MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WKRC/WISN/CNN Newsource) - Family and friends said their final goodbyes on Friday to a 12-year-old boy who was tragically taken from them.
"It just sucks because I was supposed to see him graduate," said Andre Smith II's sister.
It was every loving family's worst nightmare.
"We've got to get justice for Dre Dre," said the boy's father, Andre Smith Sr.
As friends and family filled the temple to remember the sweet smile of 12-year-old Andre, the horrors of his death rose to the surface.
"He wasn't supposed to go out like that," said his sister.
Andre was found unconscious in a home after he'd been beaten in the head with a hammer.
"I mean, I was devastated," said his cousin, Labella Hegwood. "I was in tears and in disbelief, like, it wasn't real to me."
Prosecutors charged Andre's grandfather, Andrez Martina.
Police say Martina told them Andre tried to steal his money.
"This has caused a huge division between our family, so I'm praying today we can just come together and do right by him, and just send him home peacefully," said Hegwood.
The focus now is celebrating Andre's life, but his family says justice comes next.
"Let's just not let him go in vain," said his godmother.
The Milwaukee mayor proclaimed Friday "Wisconsin Ending Crimes Against Children Day."
