There's a common phenomenon in sports known as the “contract year” player. Some athletes put their best foot forward up until they finally cash in on a huge payday, then they can finally coast a bit with their money secured. That's not something Pittsburgh Steelers fans have to worry about with TJ Watt.

The Steelers star reassured fans that nothing changes after signing his massive four-year, $112 million extension.

Via Will Graves of AP:

“I’ve been dealing with pressure my whole life,” the Steelers' two-time All-Pro said after a contract that will bump his pay to $28 million a season in 2022. “Everybody always asks, ‘What’s it like to be the younger brother of X, Y, Z?’ You know the answers to all that: I’m built for this. And I truly believe that nothing monetary will change me as a person. The work that I put in will not change. It will only grow.”

Judging by the kind of player that TJ Watt has presented himself to be in four years with the Steelers, it's probably safe to say his words go beyond mere lip service.

“..once you sign on the dotted line, you kind of forget what happened leading up to that moment,” Watt said. “And that’s kind of how this whole thing has been for me, too. So it was some long days for sure. But like I said, it’s all paid off. And now I’m just focused on playing football.”

Watt reportedly went rogue on his own agents, who were suggesting to hold out for more money, just so he could sign his contract and get the focus back to football.

After barging into Steelers' president Art Rooney II's office to inform him they had a deal, he immediately excused himself to start working out again.

TJ Watt already has three Pro Bowl appearances and two All-Pro selections to his name. Steelers fans can sleep well knowing he'll be adding a lot more hardware in the years to come.
