Last night while attending a birthday party in New York City, Kendall Jenner looked like a hologram plucked from the Noughties in a tube dress paired with a red Gucci bag and matching kitten heels by Amina Muaddi. Except, Jenner’s tube dress was not actually a dress but rather a skirt from the spring/summer 1999 Dolce & Gabbana collection. The piece was sourced by stylist Dani Michelle, who transformed it into a body-skimming dress.

These kinds of DIY moments are rare, but not unheard of in fashion. Back at the 2019 Met Gala, Brandon Maxwell simply sliced Karlie Kloss’s dress in half to make it afterparty-ready. At the 2002 VMAs, Christina Aguilera wore a Missoni scarf as a top. Johnny Valencia of Pechuga Vintage created a corset out of a Vivienne Westwood Gold Label dress for Ashley Graham, which later appeared in Vogue’s 7 Days, 7 Looks video. Not only does Jenner’s look fit like a glove, it has a great story behind it. What’s chicer than that?
