BALTIMORE—On a night that was was full of tension, Anthony Santander’s three-run home run in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and led the Orioles to a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays before an announced crowd of 11,751 at Camden Yards on Friday night.
There was yelling between Orioles manager Brandon Hyde and Toronto starter Robbie Ray in the second inning, and an ugly sequence in the sixth that allowed the Blue Jays to tie the game. After the game, Hyde apologized for the outburst.
“I understand that some of my language was picked up on a mic by our dugout,” Hyde said. “I just wanted to apologize to the all the fans out there, the Blue Jays, Robbie Ray, [manager] Charlie Montoyo. It was in the heat of the moment. I felt like our team was being accused of something that wasn’t happening. We had a lively dugout, but my language, there was no excuse for that … That was unprofessional on my part.”
During Richie Martin’s second-inning at-bat, which ended with a strikeout, Hyde and Ray were jawing at each other, with the Oriole manager barking at the Blue Jays pitcher.
“I was surprised, and that’s why it caught me off-guard,” Hyde said. “That’s why I reacted the way I did, just kind of sticking up for our guys. We do things the right way here. We play the game the right way. We do things the right way in the dugout. I felt like our guys were being targeted, and I wish I would have handled it differently.”
Ray wasn’t pleased with Hyde’s reaction.
‘I’m not going to waste my time on someone that doesn’t get into the box,” Ray said. “I don’t have the time of day.”
The Orioles had a 3-0 lead at the time of the incident.
Oriole centerfielder Cedric Mullins led off the bottom of the first with a home run, his 28th, and his eighth leadoff homer of the season. He has 11 in his career. Later, he would steal his 28th base, moving closer to the 30-30 club.
Austin Hays tripled against Ray with one out, extending his hitting streak to 16 games, and Ryan McKenna hit his second home run for the 3-0 lead.
The Blue Jays tied it at 3, and the Orioles rallied in the seventh. Mullins led off with a bunt that Julian Merryweather (0-1) booted for an error. He moved to second on Ryan Mountcastle’s tapper in front of home plate. With two outs, Hays walked, and Santander, who didn’t start the game, hit his 15th home run for a 6-3 lead.
Conner Greene (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his first major league win.
Cole Sulser shut out the Blue Jays in the eighth and ninth for his seventh save.
“We did a lot of good things, and it was a good win,” Hyde said.
The Orioles (46-94) are 8-8 since their 19-game losing streak ended. It was their fifth win in September after a 4-24 record in August. Toronto, which had won eight straight, is 77-63.
“Definitely great energy from the very beginning,” Santander said through a translator. “We’re playing against a very hot team. Definitely the energy helped us to stay competitive.”
Oriole starter Chris Ellis loaded the bases in the fourth on a single to Bichette and two-out walks to Alejandro Kirk land Lourdes Gurriel. Jake Lamb’s popup to Martin at shortstop ended the inning.
Ellis got the first two outs in the fifth and walked Marcus Semiern. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled, and Semien scored on Bo Bichette’s single. Teoscar Hernández walked to load the bases, and Kirk grounded out.
Toronto left eight men on base in the first five innings and trailed, 3-1.
Ray threw 4 1/3 innings, equaling his shortest outing of the year that also came against the Orioles on June 18th. Ray allowed three runs and a season-high eight hits.
Ellis gave up a run on five hits in five innings.
“To be honest with you, I know they’re on an eight, nine-game heater. It was nice to end that,” Ellis said.
In the top of the sixth, Oriole reliever Fernando Abad allowed a double to Gurriel. Lamb grounded out to Abad. Randal Grichuk grounded to second, and Jahmai Jones decided to throw to third to get Gurriel, but the throw was wild, and Abad collided with Gurriel on his way to the plate.
Grichuk ended up at third on a wild throw by third baseman Kelvin Gutiérrez, and Greene replaced Abad. George Springer grounded to short for the second out, and a double by Semien scored Grichuk to tie the game, 3-3.
“I think for the last two weeks, we’ve been playing better baseball, being aggressive, being competitive, and I think we’re aiming to finish the season strong,” Santander said.
Notes: Matt Harvey, who was placed on the 10-day injured list because of right knee inflammation, won’t pitch again in 2021. “We’re going to give him the rest of the year off,” Hyde said. “Harv did everything he could this year to get a job, either here or with somebody else year. He’s been an unbelievable team guy, veteran presence in our clubhouse.” … Right-hander Jorge López, who’s also on the 10-day injured list because of a sprained ankle, also won’t pitch again this season. … Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann, who’s on the 60-day injured list because of a sprained right ankle, should be able to pitch before the end of the season. … Jones and Austin Wynns had the first stolen bases of their careers.
Minor league update: Thomas Eshelman and Paul Fry each allowed four runs in relief as Triple-A Norfolk lost to Durham, 10-1. Eshelman pitched an inning in relief of Cody Sedlock (1-2) and allowed four runs on four hits while Fry recorded two outs and gave up four runs on three hits and a walk. His ERA since his demotion from the Orioles is 22.50. Adley Rutschman hit his third home run.
Double-A Bowie scored five runs in the 10th to beat Harrisburg, 8-3. Catcher Chris Hudgins had three RBIs, third baseman Jordan Westburg had three hits, and first baseman Andrew Daschbach hit his seventh home run. Drew Rom started and threw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven.
Xavier Moore allowed a three-run home run to Wilmington’s Omar Meregildo in the ninth inning as High-A Aberdeen lost to the Blue Rocks, 5-2. IronBirds first baseman TT Bowens hit his third homer to tie the score, 2-2, in the ninth.
Cam Bishop (0-1) allowed five runs in the fifth as Low-A Delmarva lost to Fredericksburg, 6-1.

Not to sound like a get off my lawn grouch, but I agree with the manager-should-wear-the-uniform take. I’ve long wondered why Hyde wears the pullover or whatever instead a uniform or something that looks more consistent with his players.
Even some players are on the field with unbuttoned uniforms showing tshirts that don’t quite match, etc.

Marty, Buck Showalter rarely wore a uniform top. He found it uncomfortable and wore a jacket instead. Some of the older managers, Francona, LaRussa, Maddon also shun the uniform.
I would like to see managers and coaches wear khakis like the trainers wear. They're not players. I like NBA coaches' wearing the team warmups, too. Looks more realistic than a suit.
I think the managers should all dress like Connie Mack, then people couldn't tell whether he was a baseball manager or a shoe salesman.

Yeah Jones is 6 for 23 in his last 7 games for 0.261 average, plus the O's are 8-7 in games he has played in, Baseball Reference shows he has a 5.11 range per 9 innings at 2B highest for the O's 2B this season, and even though he has 3 errors BR calculates 0 defensive runs saved, so average defensive performance overall, so yeah, he should definitely be kicked to the curb

And as far as his "dress code" or 5 o'clock shadow, they can all go stick it here again! As Rich states, Buck always wore a Orioles jacket and Chris Holt wears an all orange Orioles pullover shirt which I personally like.
I'm also glad Ryan Mountcastle wasn't sent down after his struggles in April. Still chases pitches out of the strike zone so he still needs to learn the strike zone and have more discipline, which was one of the reasons why his promotion was delayed the year before. But per Roch Kubatko "Murray reached 26 and 27 home runs on the final game of the 1977 season on Oct. 1 at Fenway Park. Solo shots off Rick Wise in the second inning and Mike Paxton in the eighth. He went 16 games between homers before ending his drought on June 8 in Boston, and then another 20 before his solo shot off former Oriole Pat Dobson in the nightcap of a June 29 doubleheader in Cleveland. Murray homered twice on Aug. 3 in Oakland and 26 games passed until his next, on Sept. 4 in Chicago. Eddie wasn’t as steady during his first season." Very true but I'm glad Earl Weaver stuck up for him and stated he would not manage the Orioles if Murray was sent down after he also struggled in spring training.
This is another reason why Mike Elias is getting .300 plus hitter/players with low strikeout totals in the draft, starting with Adley Rutschman, Colton Cowser and Connor Norby. I'd rather have an all .300 hitting lineup with some occasional pop then the free swinging station to station strikeout/maybe homer mostly lineup that Dan Duquette put together for Buck Showalter. The strikeout is the worst productive out a player could have as a hitter.
Yeah that plate discipline problem was so bad that he got a AAA MVP because of it.
Mountcastle should have been the AL ROY that year.

If Mountcastle would have a better strike zone awareness, meaning he still needs to learn the strike zone, because he still chases pitches out of the strike zone, he would be a .300 hitter hands down and with the 27 homers he would be hands down ROY this year!
But this was one of the reasons Mountcastle's promotion to the big leagues was delayed. The other was also trying to learn how to play the outfield which seems to be scrapped now. I hope he wins it, it's going to be close.

The Orioles GM wanted to send Murray down BUT he wasn't because as I stated and sent the link that Murray was struggling in spring training and Earl Weaver stuck up for him. And said he wouldn't manage the Orioles if he was sent down. Read it again!!!

Also Eddie Murray’s did have a great first year after settling down. Earl Weaver was adamant about letting him stay and again look where Eddie is now!! Hall of Fame!!! Was good to see Hyde showing some spunk IMO. Either MLB managers should all wear suits again like Connie Mack or all sport field managers and coaches should be required to wear the same gear as the players, for example Andy Reid in a full football uniform and all NHL coaches in full hockey gear, preferably goalie gear. Any inconsistency or deviation from a subjective standard for appearance is clearing a slap in the face to professionalism.
Okay, definitely understand the need to highlight the negative when discussing anything Orioles (that was sarcasm everyone), but why skip over the good outing by Sedlock at Norfolk last night? 6 IP 8 K 2 ER 4 H 1 BB for WHIP < 1. Cody has a 2.75 ERA at Norfolk over 4 appearances and 3 starts. Throw another log on the fire of pitching prospects giving all of us a warm feeling for 2022!
Sedlock is off to a good start at AAA. He’s 26 so lets hope the future is now for him.
Fully support dropping Abad or Barreda (because they are both 32+ years old) from the 40 man roster and giving Sedlock at look with the O's the last three weeks of 2021. Read he threw 91-93 in college and was projected to have 95-96 velocity in the pro's, hope that's come about. 28 man expansion limit is hurting the rebuilding teams the most IMO.
Joe, it was a long and very involved Orioles game, and that’s where my attention was. I try not to overwrite the minor league recap because I’m not at the games and I’m relying on box scores. I try to highlight names people are familiar with, and probably should have added more on Sedlock.

So Robbie Ray intimated that the O’s were stealing signs. Please don’t let that be true. I mean, if it is, and they’ve been doing it all year, then without doing it I’m guessing they’d have what, 16 or 17 wins tops.

I’ve been tough on the O’s this season, and for good reason. I even said I’d reached the worst emotional state a sports fan catch reach-apathy. Having said that, I gotta say this past week or so have provided some potential glimpses into a brighter future. In the last week we’ve seen Lowther and Baumann both look really good, Wells looking like a potential bonafide closer and a comeback ( the likes of which I haven’t seen before) from 5-0 down in the 8th to win 9-8. Combine that with what I saw from GR Thursday night at Harrisburg and I am finally beginning to see a glimmer of hope. There’s a long way to go but these are positives which frankly, I hadn’t seen all season. Baby steps I know, but still very good to see.
What was I saying about Wells?
