BLOOMFIELD, Iowa (KYOU) - Ten years ago, Melanie Deaton started a pumpkin patch to help send her kids to college. Now, that same pumpkin patch has expanded for families to enjoy.

Grandma’s Pumpkin Patch is a place where families can come and have fun together without spending too much money, according to the Deaton family.

Now, when you go, there is more than a pumpkin patch. You will find a fun zone for kids and adults alike. There are duck races, swings, and slides to enjoy along with other games like tetherball. “The fun zone we have a lot of new things for it. We have a duck race and we have a basketball toss this year into a big old grain wagon, " says Melanie Deaton.

The corn maze that has been created is more than just a walkthrough, it is also a scavenger hunt.

Creating the maze is a task that takes ten months to put together. It all starts with Deaton taking the picture from Google Earth to know how large the land is, she will then draw the pathways that will be mowed.

The theme of the corn maze is also decided early on with the planning. “By the time we plan it, get the inspiration, design it, plant it everybody plays in it, and then the corn comes out and then we mow it down,” says Deaton.

Blaine Deaton says there was one goal for Grandma’s Pumpkin Patch: “A decent place for people to come back to that isn’t terribly expensive.”

The official grand opening is on September 18th. For more information about Grandma’s Pumpkin Patch, you can visit their Facebook page.
