Reds Stat of the Day: Sept./Oct. 2021

Oct. 3: Reds 6, Pirates 3 -- Reiver in Reds' record books
With his six innings and one earned run allowed in the regular-season finale, Reiver Sanmartin became only the third Reds starting pitcher since 1901 to go at least 5 2/3 innings with one run or fewer given up in his first two career big league games, per Joel Luckhaupt of Bally Sports Ohio. It also happened in '07 for Bob Spade and '70 for Wayne Simpson.

Oct. 2: Pirates 8, Reds 6 -- Mahle's road dominance deterred
Tyler Mahle allowed more than three runs in a start on the road for the first time since Sept. 12, 2019, at Seattle. Mahle's 23 consecutive road starts without having allowed more than three runs is a modern club record. It was also the longest active streak in the Majors.

Oct. 1: Pirates 9, Reds 2 -- Eight is ... not so great
Three Reds relievers -- Amir Garrett, Michael Lorenzen and Dauri Moreta -- combined to allow eight runs in the pivotal bottom of the eighth inning. It was the second time this season that Cincinnati gave up eight or more runs in one inning. It also happened on May 20, when the Giants scored nine runs in the top of the third inning.

Sept. 29: White Sox 6, Reds 1 -- Junior Circuit jolts Reds again
The Reds were swept in the two-game series by the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, and they lost three of four in the season series. Interleague Play hasn't been kind to Cincinnati for several years. The club finished 9-11 vs. American League teams this season and hasn't produced a winning record vs. the AL since 2013. In the Reds' last eight seasons vs. the AL, they have combined to go 61-99.

Sept. 28: White Sox 7, Reds 1 -- Odd possibility for Suárez
Eugenio Suárez slugged his 30th home run of the season when he went deep to center field in the top of the fifth inning. Batting a Major League-worst .193 this season after a 1-for-3 night, Suárez has a chance to join Mark Reynolds (32 homers and a .198 average in 2010) as the only players in MLB history to hit at least 30 home runs with an average under .200.

Sept. 27: Reds 13, Pirates 1 -- Votto's mammoth blast
For his second home run of the game, Joey Votto hit a drive to right field in the fourth inning that traveled a projected 466 feet, according to Statcast. It was the longest home run by a Reds hitter in 2021 and the second longest for the club since Statcast began tracking in 2015. It trails only Aristides Aquino's 469-foot homer vs. the Cubs on Aug. 10, 2019. Votto's previous longest Statcast-tracked homer was 449 feet on May 2, 2017, also vs. the Pirates.

Sept. 26: Reds 9, Nationals 2 -- Cabrera snaps Cincy skid
Asdrúbal Cabrera's two-out single through the middle in the fifth snapped his 0-for-22 skid since joining the Reds as a waiver claim from Arizona on Aug. 27. With his second-inning groundout in his first at-bat, Cabrera established a new record for the most hitless at-bats for a non-pitcher to begin a tenure with the club. The previous record was held by Ivey Shiver, who began his stint with Cincinnati 0-for-20 in 1934.

Sept. 25: Reds 7, Nationals 6 -- Castellanos still stacking up RBIs
With three RBIs vs. the Nats, which included a walk-off home run, Nick Castellanos has 91 RBIs this season, marking the second time in his career he has surpassed the 90-RBI mark. His career high is 101 RBIs, which he set in 2017 with the Tigers.

Sept. 24: Reds 8, Nationals 7 (11 innings) -- Blast No. 30
Nick Castellanos extended his career high in home runs with blast No. 30 of the season to right-center field in the sixth inning. It gave the Reds two 30-home run hitters this season, joining Joey Votto (33). The last time Cincinnati had multiple 30-homer hitters in the same season was 2017, when Votto hit 36, Adam Duvall hit 31 and Scott Schebler slugged 30.

Sept. 23: Nationals 3, Reds 2 -- Cessa's streak ends
When the Nationals' Juan Soto hit a two-out home run in the seventh inning on Thursday, it ended reliever Luis Cessa's streak of 27 consecutive batters retired over 9 1/3 innings and eight appearances. It was the longest perfect streak by a Reds pitcher since Homer Bailey retired 25 batters in a row over two starts in September 2013. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was also the longest perfect streak by a Reds relief pitcher since at least 1957.

Sept. 21: Pirates 6, Reds 2 -- Owning Pittsburgh
Lucas Sims hasn't allowed any runs in his last 11 appearances vs. the Pirates, totaling 13 innings. He hasn't allowed a run to the Bucs since Sept. 28, 2019.

Sept. 20: Reds 9, Pirates 5 -- 13-game win streak at home vs. Bucs
The Reds' 13-game home winning streak vs. the Pirates is their longest vs. Pittsburgh in the Queen City since an 18-game winning streak at Crosley Field from April 22, 1939, to Sept. 5, 1940.

Sept. 19: Dodgers 6, Reds 2 -- Friedl slugs way into Reds history
Pinch-hitting and leading off the bottom of the sixth inning, rookie TJ Friedl slugged a first-pitch homer to right field against Dodgers reliever Tony Gonsolin. Friedl became the first Reds player with a pinch-hit homer for his first Major League hit since Juan Francisco did so on Sept. 18, 2009, vs. the Marlins and Leo Nuñez.

Sept. 18: Dodgers 5, Reds 1 -- Ball staying inside fences at GABP
There have been three consecutive games played at Great American Ball Park without a home run hit being hit. That is tied for the longest homerless streak in the ballpark’s history with July 25-27, 2014, vs. the Nationals.

Sept. 17: Reds 3, Dodgers 1 -- Castillo a K machine
With 10 strikeouts over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, Luis Castillo notched his 12th career game of at least 10 strikeouts. His single-game record is 13 strikeouts, which came on Aug. 5, 2019, vs. the Angels.

Sept. 16: Reds 1, Pirates 0 -- Mahle keeps racking up K's
Right-hander Tyler Mahle is one of the top strikeout pitchers in the Major Leagues, moving into a tie on Thursday for 10th place in MLB with 192 strikeouts. But he’s also been one of the most consistent strikeout artists in 2021. Mahle struck out four Pirates over six innings on Thursday, which was just the fifth time all season he struck out fewer than five opposing batters in a start, and only the third time he did so in an outing of six or more innings.

Sept. 15: Pirates 5, Reds 4 -- Take 1st base ... the hard way
Cincinnati hitters have been hit 96 times this season after Jonathan India and Tucker Barnhart were plunked in the middle game against the Bucs. That's the second-most in the Majors, two behind the Dodgers' 98 entering play on Wednesday, and a Reds franchise record. India has been hit a team-leading 20 times and is third amongst MLB hitters behind Seattle's Ty France and Oakland's Mark Canha, each with 23. India drove in Barnhart with a sacrifice fly after Barnhart reached on a hit-by-pitch in the seventh.

Sept. 14: Pirates 6, Reds 5 -- Miley's September struggles
Wade Miley now has a 6.46 ERA through three starts in September. This month has been the toughest of the 2021 season for Miley, who posted a 16.68 ERA in September 2019, his last full season as a starter. In his career, the lefty has a higher ERA in September than in any other month.

Sept. 12: Cardinals 2, Reds 0 -- Bats sustain rare blanking
The Reds were shut out for the 11th time this season. Having scored 64 runs over their last 18 games, it was the first time they've been blanked since July 21.

Sept. 11: Cardinals 6, Reds 4 -- A rookie tone-setter ... with pop!
In the third inning, Jonathan India hit a two-run home run to center field. It was India's 20th homer of the season, which is second most among rookies in the National League. India has hit safely in seven of his last nine games -- including five two-hit performances. During this stretch, he is batting 12-for-35 (.343) with three homers and four doubles.

Sept. 10: Reds 4, Cardinals 2 -- Matching A-Rod, passing Frank
With his home run in the top of the fourth inning, on his 38th birthday, Joey Votto became the oldest player to hit a homer on his birthday since a 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez did it for the Yankees on July 27, 2015. It was also career homer No. 325 for Votto, who moved past Frank Robinson for second on Cincinnati's all-time list. Johnny Bench is the club's all-time leader with 389.

Sept. 8: Cubs 4, Reds 1 -- Mr. Robinson, you have HR company
With his solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, Joey Votto reached 324 homers for his career. That tied Votto with Hall of Famer Frank Robinson for second on the franchise's all-time home run list. It also marked the end of Votto's season-high 16-game streak without a homer.

Sept. 7: Reds 4, Cubs 3 -- India helps deliver historic spark
When Jonathan India led off the game with a home run to center field, it marked Cincinnati's 12th leadoff homer of the season. Not only did it extend the club's single-season record, but it also tied several clubs for the all-time National League record. The Nationals also have 12 leadoff homers in 2021. A rookie, India has five of the Reds' leadoff homers.

Sept. 6: Cubs 4, Reds 3 -- Castellanos reaches 35 doubles
Nick Castellanos hit a pair doubles in the game. The first came with two outs against Justin Steele in the first inning. The other came against Steele in the top of the sixth inning. It gave Castellanos 35 doubles for the season, which is second in the National League. It's the fourth time the right fielder has hit 35 doubles in a season and his sixth over 30. Castellanos' career-high for a season is 58 doubles for the Tigers and Cubs in 2019.

Sept. 5: Tigers 4, Reds 1 -- Naquin keeps opponents honest
In the eighth inning, center fielder Tyler Naquin recorded two assists by helping to nab Tigers on the bases. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Naquin became the first Reds outfielder with multiple assists in an inning since Bobby Tolan in the ninth inning of a July 29, 1972, game vs. the Padres. Cincinnati went on to lose that game in 17 innings.

Sept. 4: Reds 7, Tigers 4 -- Can't cut down The Punisher's power
With his three-run home run in the fifth inning, Aristides Aquino ended a 13-game stretch without hitting a homer. The hit also snapped a 2-for-33 slump.

Sept. 3: Tigers 15, Reds 5 -- India's power stroke heating up
After homering in the fifth inning, Jonathan India has 12 homers since the All-Star break. For the season, his OPS stands at .837. India is trying to become only the third Reds rookie to ever produce at least 10 homers after the All-Star break and finish with an OPS of at least .900 (Adam Dunn in 2001, Joey Votto in '08).

Sept. 1: Cardinals 5, Reds 4 (Game 1); Reds 12, Cardinals 2 (Game 2) -- 6 RBIs in first two innings
With his second-inning grand slam in Game 2 -- his second homer of the night -- Nick Castellanos became the first Reds player to collect six RBIs in the first two innings of a game since the RBI became an official statistic in 1920.
