NEW YORK — It’s been a while since Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez did something so ridiculous that it left you shaking your head, you know, like some of the whiffs on his many passed balls in recent seasons.

Sanchez made up for it Friday night early into the Yankees’ Subway Series opener against the Mets at Citi Field by gifting a game-tying run with an all-time catching blunder.

The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the first on a two-out hit by Javier Baez that turned into an RBI single instead of a third out when Sanchez was late making a tag at the plate after accepting a perfect throw from left fielder Joey Gallo with the baserunner 30 feet from the plate.

Jonathan Villar was ruled out by plate umpire Ted Barrett after being tagged on his helmet, but a replay challenge changed the call to a run.

The replay official got it right: Villar slid under the tag as Sanchez stood there failing to lower his glove.

It was an embarrassing mistake by Sanchez, who has made more than his share since taking over as the Yankees’ starting catcher in the second half of the 2016 season.

The Yankees went into the game nursing a season-long six-game losing streak and on a 2-10 slide since winning 13 in a row.
