After a summer transfer window in which the club was forced to cut costs across the board, Inter Milan is now aiming to do what it takes to keep its core players.

Inter Milan club officials are striving to come to terms with multiple players on contract extension deals, including with Italian midfielder Nicolo Barella.

As noted by the Italian-based outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan well aspires to extend Barella’s current contract.

The reigning Serie A champions face no real sense of urgency to sign the midfielder to a new deal; he currently has three more years remaining on his active contract.

Still, Inter Milan would like to add another two years to his current contract and up his yearly salary deal to around €5 million, which would include bonuses as well.

The Serie A powerhouse has one notable plan to entice Barella to extend his stay with the side; club officials aim to offer him the captain’s armband for next season. At the moment, Slovenian goalkeeper Samir Handanovic is Inter Milan’s team captain, while veteran defender Andrea Ranocchia is the vice-captain.

Barella’s name was often seen in the transfer rumor mill over the recent summer transfer window.

The Italian midfielder was linked with the likes of FC Bayern Munich and Liverpool. Bayern's rumored interest in the Inter talent originated months ago during new German national team manager Hansi Flick's run with the Bundesliga powerhouse. But although both Bayern and Liverpool had an intrigue in making a move for him, the German side instead opted to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer while the Reds came away from the transfer window without having signed such a player.

As mentioned, Inter Milan is looking to keep its core players at the club, as the side is also aiming to come to terms with striker Lautaro Martinez on a new extension deal as well.

For now, Barella will continue to be a mainstay in Inter's starting lineups this season as the club looks to successfully defend its Serie A title.
