Ohio State football linebacker Palaie Gaoteote IV has transfer approved by NCAA, can play for the Buckeyes immediately

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Palaie Gaoteote IV can play for the Ohio State football team this season, after all, as it was announced Friday that the NCAA has approved the linebacker’s petition for immediate eligibility.

On Thursday, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day was told that Gaoteote’s request to transfer from USC to Ohio State had been denied, but apparently there was some miscommunication. Later, Ohio State clarified that it was working with the NCAA to resolve the case.

Given the NCAA’s decision, Gaoteote could theoretically play against Oregon in Saturday’s noon showdown at Ohio Stadium. It’s unsure what his status is as far as how much he has practiced, but the former five-star prospect is expected to, at least, bolster Ohio State’s veteran depth in a relatively inexperienced linebacker room.

In three injury-plagued seasons at USC, Gaoteote recorded 105 tackles (7.5 for loss) and two sacks.

Gaoteote has been on Ohio State’s roster but has not yet been on scholarship. He has been listed in the student directory since mid-June.

Gaoteote practiced with Ohio State throughout preseason camp. However, Day said he was typically held out of practicing with the first and second string due to the uncertainty as to whether he could play this season. Gaoeteote did not travel for the Sept. 2 season-opening win at Minnesota.

The NCAA passed a rule over the summer granting immediate eligibility for first-time transfers. However, Gaoteote entered the transfer portal last December — several months before the rule change.
