The Boston Red Sox activated All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
Bogaerts hasn't played since being pulled off the field on Aug. 31 following his positive test. He's one of multiple players who contracted the virus during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak inside the Red Sox clubhouse.
The 28-year-old is hitting .298/.366/.501 with 20 homers and 70 RBIs in 124 games this season.
Bogaerts' activation comes just a few hours after Boston ace Chris Sale tested positive for COVID-19.
Both Sale and infielder Jonathan Arauz were placed on the COVID IL on Friday. Arauz - the 13th Red Sox player lost to the outbreak - has repeatedly tested negative but is still experiencing symptoms and went on the IL as a precaution, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.
The Red Sox also activated pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez from the IL and selected reliever Kaleb Ort from Triple-A Worcester. Reliever Austin Davis was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move.
