The 17 Best Sheet Sets of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

After testing nearly 200 sheets, we feel pretty confident in our choices.

Real Simple / Henry Wortock

There's no doubt that the sheets on your bed can affect the quality of your sleep. However, finding the best set for your needs can be tricky—especially if you don't even know what to look for.

Alicia Cheung and Eva Bradley of Studio Heimat note that “classic percale cotton or sateen woven cotton are the two most popular types of sheets amongst our clients, particularly for quality and durability,” and it’s true that cotton sheets are the safest bet for most people. But there are plenty of other materials out there that may be suited for your needs, including linen, bamboo, or Tencel.

To find the best sheets for every sleeper, we put nearly 200 sheet sets to the test over a span of several months to evaluate their quality, breathability, durability, value, and more. We also considered factors like material, weave, and certifications when coming up with this list. For expert advice on what to consider when shopping for bed sheets, we spoke to Cheung and Bradley, as well as Preeti Gopinath, Associate Professor of Textiles at Parsons School of Design.

What Stands Out
  • They have a no-wrinkle finish to ensure they stay smooth out of the dryer.

What Could Be Improved
  • This set doesn’t have any certifications.

The Lands’ End 400 Thread Count Supima Cotton No Iron Sateen Sheet Set wowed us with its incredible softness and breathability. We were impressed with its silky hand, especially when compared to other options we tested that had a stiff, papery quality. In contrast, these sheets feel sleek and smooth, almost like satin, and only got better with time. After six months of use, the sheets still feel luxe with enough temperature-regulating properties to satisfy both hot and cold sleepers.

Made from Supima cotton, which is made in the U.S. and is known for its exceptional strength and quality, these sheets are as durable as they are soft. Over several months of use, these sheets never thinned or pilled in the wash, and they continued to feel luxuriously smooth against the skin. They're also treated with a no-wrinkle finishing process so they won’t wrinkle when you remove them for the washer.

These sheets have an 18-inch pocket, so they can fit snugly on deep mattresses without popping off amidst tossing and turning. We also like that they come in a variety of colors to match beyond just neutrals, and they have a sateen weave which gives them a silky, cooling touch. In short, if you're looking for a simple yet high-quality sheet set in an affordable price range, these can't be beat.

What Stands Out
  • The corners of the fitted sheet are designed to stay put, and we can confirm that it won’t move unless you want it to.

What Could Be Improved
  • They aren’t particularly cooling.

For those shopping for sheets on a budget, the Better Homes & Gardens Hygro Cotton Sheet Set should be your first choice. (Better Homes & Gardens is owned by Real Simple’s parent company, Dotdash Meredith.) This cotton sheet set is made using a special spinning technique that makes each cotton yarn more effective at wicking away moisture. We didn’t notice any defects in the craftsmanship of these sheets, such as loose threads, snags, or stitching issues, and they feel sturdy. Plus, the 100% cotton fabric is resistant to pilling.

These sheets have a lighter weight and are on the thinner side, and while they have a matte finish like percale sheets, they have a softer, almost brushed texture. We found them especially comfortable to sleep in during the winter, since they feel cozy without contributing to any overheating. Since they don’t have a crisp, cooling feel, especially hot sleepers should probably search elsewhere.

These sheets come with other smart features, like unique corner stitching on the corners to ensure the edges don't pop off, and labels to easily distinguish between the top/bottom and sides. We also appreciate the deep pockets, which keep the fitted sheet secure on the bed. While these sheets don't have that hotel-like quality that some sleepers crave, we are quite impressed with their durability considering their price point, especially since they’ve maintained the same quality after six months of use.

What Stands Out
  • They remain soft and silky after months of use.

What Could Be Improved
  • We noticed some loose threads after six months of use.

Bamboo may not sound like a comfortable material for sheets, but this luxurious set proves otherwise. These sheets are actually made from bamboo viscose, a fabric that's made from pulverized bamboo fibers that are processed to create silky-smooth, cooling sheets with a beautiful drape. And sure enough, these sheets are impressively temperature-regulating, and managed to keep us cool night after night.

These sheets are remarkably durable. We slept in them for six months and washed them several times a week, and the only wear they received was a few loose threads—no pilling or rips to be found. We also appreciated that they remained wrinkle-free when coming out of the dryer, and they fit easily onto the mattress.

While these sheets are pretty pricey, they're a worthy investment in our eyes. They are incredibly soft and smooth, almost like silk, and their excellent craftsmanship ensures they'll stay in good condition for a while. They have an oversized fit, so you won’t have to fight your partner for sheets; plus, the extra-deep pocket of 20 inches ensures they'll stay put on your mattress and bring you a luxurious sleeping experience for years to come.

What Stands Out
  • These sheets are durable and don’t hold onto stains.

What Could Be Improved
  • It’s not made from natural materials.

Say goodbye to night sweats with this cooling sheet set. Crafted with a blend of polyester and the brand’s moisture-absorbing Coolmax fabric, these sheets boast impressive breathability. We found the sheets to be soft and cool to the touch, maintaining what we would consider the perfect temperature for a hot sleeper. The water drop also expanded quickly during our breathability test, a testament to the sheets’ superb moisture management.

Although the sheets have a 14-inch pocket depth, they can fit mattresses up to 17 inches in height. While we noticed a few loose threads pre-wash, the construction stitch line still seemed very secure. We were amazed at how well the stains came out—we couldn’t identify any residue or markings post-wash. The sheets were easy to get onto the mattress, and they stayed secure as we tossed and turned. However, we did notice some extra fabric bunching up a bit in the middle. Aside from the loose material, we have no complaints with this sheet set. Given its affordable price and high quality, you can’t go wrong with this cooling pick.

What Stands Out
  • They’re not as wrinkly as other sheets, and they’re exceedingly durable.

What Could Be Improved
  • They’re a bit heavier than we expected, which might not be to everyone’s liking.

Boll & Branch's luxury bedding never fails to disappoint. Their Signature Hemmed Sheet Set is made with top-notch long-staple cotton, which yields a sheer fabric that's amazingly soft, smooth, and durable. They're also GOTS-certified organic, so you can be sure that they’re free from chemicals and are made with sustainable practices throughout the entire supply chain.

While expensive, these sheets are built to last. They remained in perfect condition throughout our testing, only getting softer with use. After six months of use, they looked practically as good as new with no loose threads or discoloration whatsoever. The only issue we ran into was that they shrunk a bit with washing, but it wasn’t noticeable (we only noticed because we measured them!).

These sheets are denser in weight, which definitely gives them a luxe feel, but may not be ideal if you prefer silky, lightweight bedding. However, they're still quite breathable—we didn't overheat while testing them despite the thicker fabric. All in all, with their flat seams, generous 17-inch pocket, and sateen weave, this sheet set oozes extravagance and comfort and can upgrade any bed.

What Stands Out
  • They have the softness of flannel but are much more breathable.

What Could Be Improved
  • Stains are difficult to remove, and they don’t stay securely on the mattress.

The Parachute Brushed Cotton Sheet Set is one of the softest sets we’ve slept in, proving that you don't need a lot of bells and whistles to create your ideal bed. These sheets feature a plain weave which creates a classic matte finish, and they're made with double-brushed fabric that is significantly softer than other cotton sheets we tested.

These sheets aren't cooling, but we didn't find them overly hot to sleep in. They felt smooth, crisp, and substantial without being too heavy, almost like sleeping under your favorite T-shirt. And, unlike other sets, the texture didn’t have a rough feel at all—truly, these are the softest sheets around, and became even softer after three months of use. While a few threads did come loose after putting them in the washing machine, they didn't shrink at all, and no other signs of wear occurred. On the down side, we’ve found that we needed deeper sheets for our mattress—the fitted sheet doesn’t always stay put, requiring us to readjust it every week or so, though this hasn’t been a dealbreaker.

While they're pricier than other options on this list, we think they're well worth it based on their supreme softness and overall quality. One small note is that we found it difficult to remove stains from these sheets, so you may want to opt for a darker color to be on the safe side. Otherwise, we bet you'll be wowed by their serious comfort and coziness.

What Stands Out
  • The sheets are very durable and breathable, and the top sheet is optional.

What Could Be Improved
  • We wish the fitted sheet had tags to indicate the top/bottom and sides.

Sleeping with Parachute’s Percale Sheet Set felt like night and day compared to previous sheet sets we've used. They're impressively breathable and lightweight, so they’re excellent for hot sleepers or those who want sheets specifically for summer, and they are remarkably soft as well. We also liked their barely-there quality, which prevented them from feeling too stiff or heavy and made for a more comfortable sleeping experience.

These sheets have a percale weave, which yields a crisp, cool finish. They don't have the same sheen or silky touch that a sateen weave has, but they make you feel like you’re sleeping in a posh hotel, especially since they're made with long-staple Egyptian cotton. Thanks to the longer fabric fibers, this durable sheet withstood three months of use (and cat clawing) with no wear and tear. The material even gets cozier the more you wash it. Stain-removal was also a breeze—a mascara stain came out easily in the washing machine—and the sheets dried very quickly as well, even on the manufacturer-recommended low setting. Plus, because they're Oeko-Tex certified, you can be certain they’re free from harmful chemicals.

The only improvement we would make to this sheet set would be to add indicator tags on the fitted sheet—it was a little bit of a struggle to make the bed without them. However, based on their amazing softness, breathability, and durability, we enthusiastically recommend these sheets to anyone who likes simple yet luxurious bed sheets.

What Stands Out
  • While most sateen sheets aren’t cooling, these are surprisingly breathable.

What Could Be Improved
  • They don’t have as much of a sheen as other sateen sheets.

These hotel-quality sheets are a true steal. While they're one of the most affordable options on this list, they're made with buttery soft organic cotton, so they’re made of high-quality, long-lasting materials.

The sateen weave gives these sheets a smooth and silky quality that give them an extra-luxe look. While sateen sheets tend to hold onto heat, these sheets are surprisingly breathable, but not quite as cooling as percale sheets. Also, these sheets are more matte compared to other sateen sheets, but still have a slight sheen that looks amazing on the bed. We also liked how the fitted sheet has top and bottom labels which make it easier to put on your bed, and they have a pocket depth of 16 inches, so they won't be too tight on your mattress.

These sheets are made with long-staple cotton fibers, which make for a more durable sheet that can stand up to lots of wear and washes. Indeed, after six months of using and washing these sheets we’ve found that they hold up beautifully, with no loose threads or changes in appearance. Additionally, we like how this set comes in several color options, including unique colors like sage, light blue, and a black and white windowpane pattern. The sheets are so great, some of us are even investing in a second set.

What Stands Out
  • The combination of bamboo and cotton makes these sheets a great option for year-round use.

What Could Be Improved
  • The pocket depth isn’t as deep as most sheet sets, so they may not be suitable for thicker mattresses.

This Company Store sheet set combines cotton and bamboo to create sheets that are smooth, soft, and comfortable to sleep under. Bamboo is known for its breathability, and we can confirm that these sheets are excellent at wicking away moisture and keeping you cool all night long. On the other hand, the addition of cotton sateen gives these sheets some heft, and we found that they are an ideal year-round sheet set no matter the temperature outside.

This sheet set has a smooth, silk-like touch and subtle sheen that brings an elegant look to your bed. They have a nice drape, although they do wrinkle easily, so be sure to remove them promptly from the dryer. On that note, we found these sheets to be quite durable, so you can machine wash and dry as needed without damaging them. They became even more comfortable throughout six months of use, maintaining a silky feel without being slippery or staticky.

That said, these sheets may not be the best option if you have a taller bed. The fitted sheet has a pocket depth of 14 inches, which isn't ideal for deep-pocket mattresses, and the largest size The Company Store offers is a king. However, if you don’t use a mattress topper or have a standard-sized bed, we bet this set will become a staple of your summer bedding.

What Stands Out
  • They didn’t shrink at all after washing and drying.

What Could Be Improved
  • Their lighter weight means they aren’t as durable as other sheets.

These linen sheets from Parachute are ideal for those who want bedding that can adapt to all seasons. Linen is known for its temperature-regulating properties, so it will keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and you won't have to rotate sheets every time the weather changes. Plus, it's moisture-wicking, which is beneficial if you deal with night sweats.

Parachute uses luxurious European flax to create a soft and sophisticated sheet set. Their fabric is Oeko-Tex certified, so no unpleasant chemicals are found in your bedding, and they arrive pre-washed, which eliminates the initial roughness that's associated with new linen. Therefore, they’re great for new and long-time linen users alike. And as you break in these sheets, you'll notice that they only get softer and cozier.

This sheet set brings a rumpled, lived-in look to your bed, so it's not ideal for people who prefer crisp, wrinkle-free bedding. However, the lightweight feel and breathability make up for it. Plus, these sheets come in a variety of beautiful, earthy hues to match your existing decor. Simply put, these linen sheets are soft, durable, and chic, and once they're on your bed, you'll never look back.

What Stands Out
  • The lightweight material is super soft to the touch.

What Could Be Improved
  • The sheets only come in three light colors, and some stains may be difficult to remove.

The Quince Linen Bamboo Sheet Set is the perfect summer sheet, especially for hot sleepers. Both linen and bamboo are renowned for their moisture-wicking and cooling properties, ensuring you'll stay cool and dry all night long. Plus, they're both antimicrobial materials, which makes this sheet set great for people with sensitive skin.

After using these sheets, we can attest they may be the softest we’ve ever slept on. We found the lightweight material soft and cozy yet totally breathable. The water droplet did take a bit of time (nearly 20 seconds) to spread and absorb into the fabric, so they may not be the most moisture-wicking on our list. Thanks to the 16-inch pocket, the sheets fit perfectly on our bed, staying secure as we repositioned. Because they aren’t 100% linen, they’re a great option for people who want the breathability and look of linen but aren’t totally sold on the feel. Even after several months of use, we have yet to wake up overheated.

These sheets did fall short in our stain test—while the coffee stain came out completely, the foundation stain proved more difficult to remove, remaining 50% visible. These sheets are only available in three neutral colors, so they may not be the best choice if you’re seeking a vibrant pop of color. Otherwise, if you're looking for relaxed bedding with serious cooling properties, you can't beat this sheet set.

What Stands Out
  • These sheets are some of the most cooling out there.

What Could Be Improved
  • Some of the color options are a bit too saturated.

Bamboo sheets are renowned for their ability to keep cool, which did not go unnoticed during the testing process. In fact, we think these soft and silky bamboo sheets from Bampure are ideal for staying comfortable during heat waves. Aside from being temperature-regulating, they're also quite soft—and in our tests, they felt even softer after washing. After using the sheets for six months, they felt just as silky and soft as they were on day one.

We also found that the Bampure sheet set is convenient to put on your bed. The fitted sheet was on the looser side, making it easy to pull to all corners of your mattress, and it features elastic straps in each corner to ensure that it stays in place throughout the night. Plus, it has a 16-inch pocket, which is suitable for most mattress depths. We also liked its shiny, sleek appearance, as well as the variety of color options available, though we wish the colors weren’t quite as saturated.

What Stands Out
  • This durable sheet set is cool to the touch and comes in 15 colors.

What Could Be Improved
  • They wrinkle easily.

Similar to bamboo, Tencel lyocell, also called "eucalyptus,) is a material that's quite beneficial for hot sleepers thanks to its moisture-wicking properties. The Linenwalas Tencel Lyocell Sheet Set in particular impressed us with its cooling capabilities—it remained cool to the touch all night long and brought extra comfort to hot sleepers during our testing process. Plus, the soft, breathable quality of these sheets made them refreshing to sleep under.

These sheets have a silky sheen to them, reminiscent of sateen, and they're just as smooth and soft as your favorite long-staple cotton sheet set. Tencel, which is made from processed and strained eucalyptus fibers, is also a very strong fabric that doesn't pill or rip easily, so this sheet set will last for a long time on your bed. After six months of nightly use, we’ve noticed no changes in texture or quality. Just keep in mind that they do wrinkle very easily.

Another highlight of this sheet set is its price point. Tencel can be pricey, but these sheets are both high-quality and affordable, so you don't have to sacrifice your budget to stay cool at night. Plus, they come in lots of colors so you can find sheets that match your sleeping and decor preferences—a win-win if you ask us.

What Stands Out
  • They’re surprisingly breathable for flannel, so they’ll keep you warm without making you sweat.

What Could Be Improved
  • They don’t come in any festive patterns.

As far as we're concerned, these are the softest, coziest flannel sheets you could possibly find. They somehow became even softer throughout two months of use, and sleeping in them felt like burrowing under a luxurious cashmere sweater. While they have a heavier weight to them, they're still breathable, and keep you plenty cozy. In general, flannel is not the right choice for you if you prefer lightweight, cooling bedding. These sheets stand out because they keep you warm without causing night sweats, so they’re a good option for most sleepers in cold climates.

Made with brushed GOTS-certified organic Turkish cotton, they're supremely soft and have a thick, plush feel. Most flannel sheets pill and wear out easily, but this Coyuchi set is extremely durable in comparison. This is due to the superior, long-staple cotton, which feels smooth and adds durability, so these sheets can stand up to your washing machine and bring you comfort for years to come. Even if you're not a fan of cold weather, curling up these cozy sheets on your bed will have you looking forward to winter—they’re that cuddly.

What Stands Out
  • The level of craftsmanship is superb.

What Could Be Improved
  • The sizing is a bit off, and they’re only available in three sizes.

This sheet set is among the softest, most luxurious bedding we've tested. The long-staple organic Turkish cotton that The Citizenry uses is buttery soft and comes in five muted shades. Plus, thanks to their Oeko-Tex certification, you can sleep better at night knowing your sheets are free from harsh chemicals.

The texture of this sheet set can best be compared to sateen. It's smooth and silky, not crisp and matte like percale, and it feels light and airy to sleep under. We found its construction to be flawless, noting no pilling or rips at any point during our testing, even after machine washing. We also appreciated the level of craftsmanship that went into these sheets, as they feature understitched hems and reinforced edges that give them a sophisticated look. We’ve noticed no fading or changes in quality after six months of use, a testament to their well-made construction.

We recommend that you check out The Citizenry's size guide before purchasing, as the fitted sheet in this set was a little too big for our mattress. Despite that, we still feel that these sheets are of phenomenal quality. They have a beautiful drape, they're breathable, and they're amazingly soft—what more could you want in a sheet set?

What Could Be Improved
  • The fabric is a little thin and pills easily.

Tired of boring sheets? Leave it to Target to create a cozy sheet set that comes in an array of stylish patterns at a budget-friendly price. This 400-thread count sheet set is made from Oeko-Tex certified cotton and dyes, so not only is it free from irritating chemicals, but it's soft and breathable to sleep under, like a cotton sheet should be.

This sheet set has a lightweight, airy quality that makes it ideal for summer. The smooth cotton fabric keeps you cool all night—however, because the fabric is on the thinner side, it is more prone to pilling and isn't as long-lasting as more expensive options. After two months of use, the sheets have held up perfectly. We found them to be especially crisp and inviting post-wash, though they did get a bit wrinkly.

We were pleased that the fitted sheet has top and bottom tags, which made it much simpler to make the bed, and it has an 18-inch pocket depth to fit over taller mattresses. Plus, the corners are reinforced with extra elastic to prevent them from popping off. In terms of weave, this sheet set is sateen but feels like percale: crisp, cool, and matte. With its affordable price and comfortable feel, this patterned sheet set is a great way to bring some more pizzazz to your bedroom.

This sheet set also boasts an Oeko-Tex certification, ensuring it's free from chemicals and irritants.

These linen-like sheets felt silky and cool to the touch during our testing. They struck the perfect balance between being comfortably thick without trapping heat, so we felt cozy but not stuffy. We were impressed with their performance in the water absorption test, which demonstrated their exceptional breathability, and we think this set would be especially suitable for hot sleepers. The comfortable material also becomes softer with every wash. Stains came out easily in our laundry tests, but the sheets fell a bit short on durability—after rubbing sandpaper on them, there was slight discoloration and a small tear.

Although the sheets were a bit loose on our mattress, they didn’t shift after tossing and turning on the bed. Plus, the 16-inch pocket makes them ideal for deep mattresses or mattresses with mattress toppers.

Final Verdict

After testing nearly 200 sheet sets, we think the Lands’ End 400 Thread Count Supima Cotton No Iron Sateen Sheet Set is the best choice for most sleepers. It’s highly durable, and its extra soft fabric can suit hot and cold sleepers alike. Plus, it’s relatively affordable and comes in 11 colorways. If you’re shopping on a budget, we recommend the Better Homes & Gardens Hygro Cotton Sheet Set for its impressive durability and coziness.

Our Testing Process

To find the best bed sheets, we tested nearly 200 sets both in our testing lab and on our beds in the real world. Since every sleeper is different, we enlisted testers with a variety of sleeping preferences.

First, we evaluated the quality of each sheet, inspecting for loose threads, dye imperfections, and other flaws. We then washed and dried each sheet set following the manufacturer’s directions, setting aside the pillowcases so we could use them for comparison later on. Afterwards, we stained each sheet with coffee, oil, and foundation, and then did the same on a pillowcase for comparison. We then washed the sheets, minus the stained pillowcase, two more times.

After three washes, we inspected each sheet once again for loose threads, snags, holes, discoloration, or other imperfections. We then compared the texture and color of the washed sheet to the unwashed pillowcase, and then measured each sheet to see if any shrinkage occurred in the wash.

Next, we tested the breathability of each sheet. We placed the corner of each top sheet in an embroidery loop, making sure it was taut. We then administered one drop of water from a dropper and then measured how large the drop expanded after ten seconds. Finally, we tested durability. To do so, we swiped sandpaper back and forth 25 times over about a 5-inch area of fabric. We then evaluated how much abrasion occurred, and whether any fabric fibers came off in the process.

Once lab testing was complete, we used each sheet set in the real world over a span of six months, checking in at the 1-, 3-, and 6-month markers. We evaluated the durability and breathability of the sheets, as well as their feel after many washes.

How to Shop for Sheets Like a Pro

Material

There are a couple of things to consider when deciding what sheet material to go for, including your sleeping preferences, style, and budget. Cotton is a perennial favorite, as it’s a natural fiber that’s soft and breathable, which makes it a great option for lots of different sleepers.

If you’re a particularly hot sleeper though, you may prefer sheets made from linen, bamboo, or Tencel. All three materials have temperature-regulating properties to keep you cool even in warm weather, though they’re typically more expensive than regular cotton sheets. Tencel and bamboo, which are made from pulverized wood fibers, have a smooth, silky hand, while linen has more of a bite to it. Linen sheets do soften in the wash, but they definitely have a more textured, almost feel at first that might not be to everyone’s liking.

To make lyocell, "you take natural materials from the trunks of trees and then basically pulverize it into a pulp and mix with a solvent." Afterward, it gets strained to create yards of material that solidify. Because it's manufactured using organic materials, lyocell combines elements of natural fibers with synthetic processing, giving manufacturers more control over how their sheets look and feel. Additionally, lyocell is known to be very cooling, so it's often recommended for hot sleepers.

Weave

Sheet weave impacts the look, feel, quality, and breathability of your sheets, so it's worth paying attention to. Common types of weaves include percale, sateen, and flannel, and they each appeal to different types of sleepers.

Percale sheets use a loose, plain weave to create a crisp sheet with a matte finish, making them a great pick for hot sleepers. Sateen sheets have a heavier drape than percale, but they are known for their lustrous finish and silky touch. "If you like perfectly smooth sheets, then look for sateen sheets," says Gopinath.

Cold sleepers may prefer flannel sheets since their heavier weight and napped finish give them a warm and fuzzy feeling that's perfect for cozying up in the winter. While most flannel sheets aren’t very breathable, we found that the Coyuchi Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Sheets are an exception.

Breathability

Regardless of if you sleep hot or cold, no one enjoys waking up feeling sticky from a stifling bed sheet, so it's important to look for weaves and fabric types that promote air circulation in your sleep. Fabrics like lyocell, linen, and cotton are renowned for their cooling properties, especially in warm climates. Flannel sheets and sateen sheets feature a tighter weave, which helps trap body heat, making them warmer.

Thread Count

Contrary to popular belief, thread count doesn't always indicate the quality of your sheets. "Thread count started as a sincere form of letting us know the density of the cloth and to have a sense of how fine the yarns are," Gopinath explains. "Now, you will find sheets that are microfiber sheets, and they won't be anywhere as coarse as cotton or linen."

Microfiber sheets can have thread counts in the thousands, but many companies will inflate the thread count number shown on packages by wrapping multiple fibers into one thread, so it's more important to consider fabric quality and fiber length. The only exception might be with sateen sheets: "That's the only time that thread count matters," Gopinath says. The higher the number, the smoother and softer—and pricier—your sheets will be.

Certifications

When researching sheets, you'll come across labels such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Oeko-Tex, which provide insight into the safety, manufacturing, and fabric quality of the sheets.

"Certifications are good if you are very environmentally-conscious," says Gopinath. "It gives the people selling the materials some sort of guarantee that there was transparency in the production systems in terms of adhering to sustainable standards."

If you're looking for organic sheets, “the most robust certification is GOTS,” say Cheung and Bradley. “The GOTS requires that at least 95% of the materials in a product are certified organic. This standard also prohibits outright the use of certain substances, including in the 5% of potentially non-organic certified materials. Prohibited substances include chemical flame retardants and harmful azo dyes.” In addition to certifying the final product, GOTS also examines the entire supply chain to ensure that all materials are environmentally-friendly and ethically sourced.

Another common certification is the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which ensures that the final product hasn't been treated with harmful chemicals and is safe for consumers. But, this certification doesn't vet the product's supply chain, and its chemical limits aren't as strict as those of the GOTS.

If you find yourself stressing out about sheet certifications, Gopinath suggests that you “use labels as reference points and then make personalized decisions for your body type." Ultimately, the sheets that are going to be the best fit for you are the ones that are going to keep you comfortable throughout the night.

More Bed Sheets to Consider

Olive + Crate Eucalyptus Sheet Set: These sheets are incredibly soft, smooth, and cooling, making them a fantastic fit for hot sleepers. However, one of the pillowcase seams ripped after a few months of use, so the construction isn't as durable as similar options.

Tempur-Pedic 400 Thread Count Cool Luxury Sheet Set: True to its name, this luxurious sheet set is cozy and cool with a comfortable heaviness to it. While we like the worn-in, weathered look, we suspect that these sheets may pill overtime.

Questions You Might Ask

What kind of sheets do hotels use?

“Percale cotton, as far as we know and have noticed,” say Cheung and Bradley. Sheets with a percale weave have a cool, crisp feeling that suits a variety of sleeping types. Hotels typically use long-staple cotton varieties, namely pima, Supima, or Egyptian cotton for extra-soft and luxurious sleep. We recommend Parachute’s Percale Sheet Set for a hotel-like feel, which is made with long-staple Egyptian cotton.

How much should you expect to spend on a good sheet set?

There are lots of factors that can influence the pricing of a sheet set, so keep in mind that the overall quality of materials will be the most important aspect to consider. Cheung and Bradley give a ballpark range of $500-$1,500 for top-notch sheets, though you can still find quality options that are a little more budget-friendly. For example, the Better Homes & Gardens Hygro Cotton Sheet Set impressed us with its cool touch, and it’s priced well under $100 for a queen-sized set. As Gopinath says, "the best sheet will be the one you can afford.”

How long should a sheet set last?

Cheung and Bradley say a sheet set should last about 2-3 years, suggesting that you “buy at least two sets per bed, so one can always be in the wash.” If you have an alternate set of sheets, they say the set may last longer than the expected 2-3 years. In addition to how often you use your sheets, the material they’re made out of can also impact their longevity. Cotton sheets usually last between 2-3 years, whereas linen sheets can last for much longer. When it comes to cotton sheets, long-staple varieties will have an increased lifespan because the fabric fibers are more durable.

How do you prevent your sheets from pilling?

Pilling is the result of friction against your sheets, which causes the fibers to break and curl into a ball, explains Gopinath. "The more often you wash and run your sheets through the dryer, the more breakage of fiber will occur," she says.

Even high-quality bedding is at risk of pilling without proper care, but sheets made with synthetic materials and harsh chemical additives are more likely to pill. Linen sheets don't pill, but they do shed, according to Gopinath: "Linen sheds a lot because the fibers break in, especially in the initial years, but they last for many, many more years."

To prevent pilling, wash your sheets in cold water and use a small amount of mild detergent—not bleach—when doing so. Air drying is best for pilling prevention, but tumble drying at a low temperature works too. Then, store your freshly laundered sheets away from direct sunlight.
