Kraken Community Iceplex.
It's the perfect name.
Yes, it is serving as the base of operations for the newest NHL team. A tour of the building showed us the offices of so many people behind the scenes making the NHL dream come true in Seattle.
But it's also our community's central hub for hockey.
Yes, the Kraken Community Iceplex will hold the team's practices but it might hold yours, too. The facility at Northgate Mall houses three ice rinks that will welcome everything from local hockey leagues to adaptive programs for special needs players.
And that's just it, the location, right in our community in Northgate, adjacent to restaurants and stores so many in our town frequent. It's like the line from Field of Dreams, "If you build it they will come" The Kraken is betting that by building a hockey haven in the heart of a community, the game will grow.
It's betting that Seattle is a hockey town and investing on that vision.
"There have to be building blocks" Kraken C.E.O. Tod Leiweke told me on Thursday.
"There's no magic wand you wave and you win a (Stanley) Cup. You have to start with community, you have to have great facilities, you have to have an inspired arena, you have to have fans who are passionate. And then, that results in the players being inspired and doing things that they're maybe not supposed to. I feel like we're so well positioned to build a long-term winning program here."
Look no further than what Las Vegas did right out of the gate in 2017, making the Stanley Cup Final. It's not to say that extreme early success will happen in Seattle, it's more to the point that a fan base hungry for hockey can fuel a winner.
Results help foster that environment, but the Kraken by building this facility and opening it up to the community plans on raising a generation of kids in Seattle as Kraken fans.
So, yes, the facility is beautiful. The rinks are obviously professional level. Spectators can enjoy Starbucks, 32 Bar & Grill and the Kraken Team Store. It's a fantastic hockey experience.
But it goes beyond that, it's full proof that the Kraken has invested in Seattle, well before that first official puck drop at Climate Pledge Arena on October 23.
