Tennessee Vols morning report: Pitt preparation continues

Happy Friday. This is a big weekend for everybody, as Saturday marks the 20-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It also marks the date of a game in which the Tennessee Vols will honor one of their greatest legends, Johnny Majors.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with continued coverage of the preparations for that game, against the Pittsburgh Panthers. We’ve got updates provided by the head coach Thursday, news on team captains and the jersey combination to bring you.

Beyond football, there is a men’s basketball schedule update to bring you. Also, we have previews in two other sports, as volleyball and men’s tennis both have outings to prepare for. Simply put, there’s a lot to cover, so let’s dive in, starting with more coverage of Saturday’s football matchup.

Josh Heupel talks Pitt again on Thursday – Austin Price, VolQuest.com

Ahead of the Tennessee Vols football team’s Saturday matchup with the Pittsburgh Panthers, UT head coach Josh Heupel met with the media Thursday. In terms of injuries, Heupel said Cooper Mays has made huge leaps the past two days, but he couldn’t say if Tiyon Evans would be available. Here’s a bit of what he said about Pitt.

"“It’s a good football team in all three phases, but on the defensive side of it, veteran, physical front seven. Their safeties do a great job in run support. You’ve got to create some seams and make some big plays. It’s going to be man-press (coverage) on the outside, you’ve got to be able to make some one-on-one plays.”"

Honorary captains named for game vs. PittGrant Ramey, GoVols247

When Tennessee football takes the field against the Pittsburgh Panthers Saturday, former Vol All-American Bobby Majors, the brother of the late Johnny Majors, will serve as an honorary captain. Joining him will be former Pitt and Mississippi State Bulldogs head coach Jackie Sherrill.

"Sherrill, who spent eight years coaching under Majors, went 50-9-1 in five seasons as the head coach at Pitt, succeeding Majors in 1977, when Majors left to become head coach at Tennessee.…Bobby Majors, the youngest of five Majors brothers in “The First Family of Tennessee Football,” played in 32 games for the Vols from 1968-71. At defensive back, he totaled 198 tackles, 13 interceptions and forced four fumbles."

Uniform combos revealed for Vols vs. Pitt – Jack Foster, SI.com

A unique uniform combo for Tennessee football’s Saturday matchup with the Pittsburgh Panthers was revealed with a video on the program’s Twitter account Thursday. Pitt’s will wear white jerseys with gold pants.

"Week 2 will see Pittsburgh come to Rocky Top for the ‘Johnny Majors Classic,’ and in honor of the all-time great VFL, Tennessee will wear all orange this Saturday."

Men’s basketball SEC schedule revealed – SECSports

The schedule is set for the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball program. A day after the SEC revealed the schedule for women’s basketball teams, rounding out the Lady Vols’ slate, it did the same for the men.

"Conference play tips off Wednesday, December 29, and runs through Saturday, March 5. Each SEC team plays the other 13 teams at least one time during league play. They will then play their three permanent opponents a second time with the remaining two games changing annually. The ninth annual Big 12/SEC Challenge will take place on Saturday, January 29."

Volleyball to visit Morehead StateNate Tosado, UT Daily Beacon

In their first road game of the season, the Tennessee Lady Vols volleyball program will face the Morehead State Eagles Friday night. UT comes in with a 4-1 record, having upset the Baylor Bears but losing to the Pittsburgh Panthers last week.

"The two-game series between the Lady Vols and Eagles will begin Friday at Johnson Arena before returning to Thompson-Boling Arena on Sunday. The match will be the first time this season the Lady Vols are ranked, having been ranked No. 23 in the nation in the latest The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll."

Men’s tennis set for Knoxville Showdown – UTSports

This weekend marks the first Tennessee Vols men’s tennis event of the 2021-2022 year. UT will host the Knoxville Showdown on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"The Vols will serve host to Kentucky, Pepperdine and Columbia in the squad’s first hidden dual of the fall slate.Tennessee welcomes four newcomers to the roster this year, along with five returners from last season’s SEC Tournament Championship team."
