Former UNC football standout Mack Hollins has been named a team captain by the Miami Dolphins.

Several years ago, Mack Hollins did not receive any scholarship offers upon graduating from high school in Rockville, Maryland. After attending Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia, the scholarships came pouring in for the Hollins. However, he chose an unorthodox route. Hollins decided to walk onto the football team for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. The deal was that he would have to earn his acceptance to UNC on his own. And, he did.

The rest is history, rather his story. Hollins became captain of the special teams unit during his freshman season as a Tar Heel. Likewise, Hollins led all NCAA college football players with 24.8 yards per reception. Not bad for someone who could not earn a scholarship out of high school.

For the 2021 NFL football season, Hollins was rewarded with the honor of becoming one of the team captains for the Miami Dolphins. The team made the announcement on Wednesday, September 8th.

Some critics are astonished at this fact and focusing more on Tua Tagovailoa not being a captain. Here at Keeping It Heel, we choose to highlight the positives surrounding this accomplishment for Hollins.

Some teams allow the football players to vote on team captains whereas other teams’ head coaches choose the captains. In the case of the Miami Dolphins, teammates voted in Hollins and five other players as captains.

As a team captain, Hollins provides leadership on and off the field in order to earn this honor. Leadership is nothing new for Mack Hollins. It’s his pedigree. He was built for a role as a captain and furthermore, Hollins has leadership experience that makes this a perfect fit for him.
