On Thursday, the Ravens lost their third running back to a season-ending injury when former Rutgers star Gus Edwards went down with a torn ACL. He joins J.K. Dobbins (torn ACL) and Justice Hill (torn Achilles) on the sideline.

So desperate times call for desperate measures. ESPN reports the Ravens are “signing free-agent running back Devonta Freeman to their practice squad, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told (Adam) Schefter on Thursday. It is expected that Freeman will be promoted to the active roster.”

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebeic reported Monday that Baltimore brought Freeman in for a workout.

The 29-year-old Freeman, a two-time Pro Bowl selection with the Atlanta Falcons, played in five games last season for the New York Giants, who struggled to replace Saquon Barkley after a season-ending ACL injury.

Freeman will join former New York Jets running backs Le’Veon Bell and Trenton Cannon in Baltimore.

Th 29-year-old Bell was a three-time Pro Bowl selection with the Pittsburgh Steelers who struggled with the Jets in 2019 and 2020, eventually being released last October before catching on with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 27-year-old Cannon was a sixth-round pick of the Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft. He played in 20 games over two seasons for the Jets, collecting 113 yards and one touchdown on 38 carries.

The Jets waived Cannon before the 2020 season and he was picked up by the Carolina Panthers. He went on to play in 14 games with Carolina, with 40% of his action coming on special teams.

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec reports the Ravens also expect to sign former New Orleans Saints running back Latavius Murray.
