Letter: One way to stop trucks running into the West Avenue bridge

Richard Yurick

The city of Canandaigua has a great opportunity to be proactive while reconstructing the area under the West Avenue bridge. While the bridge is closed, we can solve the chronic problem of trucks running into the bridge.

If you remember the recently removed toll booths on I-90, hanging from the roof of the tollbooth were a series of short chains. Those chains were designed to tinkle on the roof of any trucks taller than an underpass. Then, the truck driver will hear it and realize that they should not proceed or they will hit a bridge. A simple U-shaped frame over the road about 150 yards from the bridge can alert the truck drivers before they hit the bridge.

I know this works from personal experience while driving a rental truck. It's a very simple, low-cost, maintenance-free solution that could save a lot of headaches. I urge the city to consider it.
