Hall of Famer Chris Webber reflects on career with Sixers, Allen Iverson

Chris Webber’s time with the Philadelphia 76ers will not be remembered fondly by most fans. He was clearly on his last legs, and he was hobbled by a bad knee injury. He could not live up to the expectations the Sixers had for him.

Philadelphia acquired Webber from the Sacramento Kings midway through the 2004-05 season in order to find a suitable second in command to Allen Iverson. Webber’s numbers were not bad. He averaged 15.6 points and 7.9 rebounds, but it was clear he was not the dominant Webber of old.

Nevertheless, his overall career was great enough to earn him a spot in the Hall of Fame, and he sat down with The Athletic and The Stadium’s Shams Charania to reflect on his time in Philadelphia and playing next to Iverson:

A.I. is the best athlete that I’ve ever seen in my life. Period. He’s the best player I’ve ever played with. Period. And I wish I could have got there before — I wish I could have got there with a good knee. Out of all the players that played with him, I averaged the most points. It made me feel good and it pissed me off because I think I could’ve given him seven or eight more points. It was an honor to play with him. I think about the fans of Philly, and they get a terrible rap, but they showed me love when they shouldn’t have. They showed me at a time where they didn’t have to.

I remember a young Lou Williams in practice with tears in his eyes because A.I. was having his way every single day. I remember talking to Lou and I’m so proud of who he is because of that moment. It should be inspirational because he decided in that moment to become one of the greatest reserve players of all time.

Overall, Webber averaged 17.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists during his career with the Sixers that spanned across three seasons before being waived in the 2006-07 season. He then signed on with the Detroit Pistons as they made a run to the Eastern Conference finals.
